Arthur Jones, Super Bowl Champion, Dead at 39

The football world is mourning a sudden loss.

Arthur Jones, a defensive lineman who played for the Baltimore Ravens from 2010 until 2013, passed away on Oct. 3 at the age of 39. He was a member of the team that won Super Bowl XLVII in 2012.

Syracuse University initially announced the news of Jones’ death, noting his time as a college athlete there before joining the Ravens. The reason for his passing was not disclosed.

John Wildhack, Syracuse Director of Athletics, said in a statement that Arthur Jones was not only a fantastic player but also a wonderful person. He continued to support the football program even after he stopped playing, and he positively influenced many student-athletes, always offering encouragement and a cheerful attitude.”

After playing for the Ravens for four years, Jones joined the Indianapolis Colts, where he played from 2014 to 2016. He then played a single season with Washington before retiring from the NFL in 2017.

Jones came from an athletic family, with his two younger brothers also becoming professional athletes. Jon Jones is the current UFC heavyweight champion, and Chandler Jones won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots in 2014.

Like his father, Arthur Jones IV, Arthur’s son, is also a football player. He plays defensive end at Christian Brothers Academy. Earlier this year, he received a scholarship offer from the same university his father attended, as reported by local news source WIVT.

Soon after the NFL player passed away, the Ravens’ general manager, Eric DeCosta, shared that the team was deeply upset by the news.

“Arthur truly brightened the lives of those he met,” DeCosta stated in a post on X (previously known as Twitter) on October 3. “His cheerful smile, enthusiastic spirit, and consistently positive attitude had a way of lifting people up.”

DeCosta continued by characterizing the deceased football player as kind, courteous, and enthusiastic, and noted that his deep affection for his family, teammates, and friends was clear to see.

“We send our deepest condolences to the Jones family,” he continued, “and all who loved Arthur.”
