As Elden Ring Nightreign leads the pack, Final Fantasy XVI has a solid Xbox debut — Square Enix’s multi-platform strategy for Final Fantasy is paying off in spades

As a passionate gamer, I’ve just stumbled upon some fascinating insights shared by Circana – a leading name in Marketing Research and Technology. They’ve unveiled an intriguing sales chart that lists the top-selling Xbox games, both physical and digital copies, across the United States for June 2025!

One of the top games is a surprising entry.

As per the sales chart shared by @matpiscatella.bsky.social, Elden Ring Nightreign has held the top position for about a month now.

In June 2025, the highly anticipated Xbox version of Final Fantasy XVI quickly climbed to the fourth position and even outperformed Minecraft sales.

Elden Ring Nightreign, being the number one best-selling Xbox game of June 2025, is understandable.

The game was an unusual but skillfully crafted spin-off of Elden Ring in the Roguelike style, and it was applauded by both critics and enthusiasts for its innovative combat system and tough boss fights reminiscent of earlier FromSoftware games.

Elden Ring Nightreign also got a favorable 4/5 star review from us here at Windows Central.

Contrarily, I didn’t anticipate Final Fantasy XVI to become a record-breaking bestseller on Xbox so swiftly, not even surpassing the sales of Minecraft, the most successful video game series ever.

Let me clarify that I’m not implying any disregard for Final Fantasy XVI; on the contrary, it boasts exceptional production quality, intense battles, and intricate plotlines and characters. It’s a fantastic game, indeed.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my thoughts about Final Fantasy XVI. Despite the game’s undeniably high quality, it didn’t quite live up to Square Enix’s financial aspirations when it was confined as an exclusive PlayStation 5 title.

Eventually, in late 2024, Final Fantasy XVI made its debut on PC. After a long period of speculation, it was eventually revealed for Xbox platforms, having been secretly released during the Xbox Game Showcase in June.

According to the sales graph, it appears that Square Enix’s decision to strengthen their multi-platform approach has significantly improved the financial prospects of Final Fantasy XVI.

In actuality, Final Fantasy XVI has been performing exceptionally well on Xbox, not only outperforming Minecraft in sales but also surpassing Call of Duty Black Ops 6, WWE 2K25, Forza Horizon 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

It’s particularly noteworthy that Final Fantasy XVI reached this sales threshold without relying on Xbox Game Pass as a means of distribution or promotion.

It’s possible that the low sales could be due to decreasing enthusiasm for other games listed on the charts, combined with strong desire among Xbox gamers for Final Fantasy XVI and more Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) from Square Enix. Alternatively, it might just be a mix of these factors.

It seems quite likely that the strategy Square Enix has implemented, which includes releasing Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster as a multi-platform game and it becoming the top seller on the Xbox Store in 2024, is proving to be successful for them.

When the long-anticipated release of Final Fantasy VII Remake on Xbox hits stores in Winter 2025, it’s clear that this highly-expected Xbox game will quickly dominate the US sales charts without delay.

Will these lead to Final Fantasy games being released on Xbox day one?

It’s heartening to witness Final Fantasy XVI receiving such warm responses on Xbox, at last bringing well-deserved financial prosperity for the developers’ tireless efforts. Almost makes one momentarily forget the disheartening speculation about the possible cancellation of the rumored remake of Final Fantasy IX.

Furthermore, this ensures that Square Enix will carry on publishing Final Fantasy titles and other role-playing games for Xbox platforms, as demonstrated by the imminent Xbox launch of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles.

Furthermore, it implies that the release of Xbox version for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is inevitable since Final Fantasy VII Remake will be available on Microsoft’s gaming platform.

Instead, would it be possible for upcoming mainline Final Fantasy games to debut simultaneously on both PlayStation and Xbox systems, thereby eliminating timed exclusivity deals?

Could the tremendous triumph of Elden Ring by FromSoftware inspire them to develop additional multiplayer games, perhaps even ones similar to their upcoming, enigmatic title exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2, The Duskbloods?

Let’s keep an eye on the plans that Square Enix and FromSoftware are preparing for the Tokyo Game Show 2025, as we won’t know the details until then – especially since Xbox has confirmed its attendance.
