As Fallout Season 2 debuts, Todd Howard addresses a New Vegas misconception that Bethesda hates the RPG — “Huge respect for the folks at Obsidian”

With the premiere of Season 2 of Amazon’s Fallout series happening very soon, many fans are revisiting Obsidian Entertainment’s popular 2010 game, Fallout: New Vegas. The new season takes place primarily in the iconic city of New Vegas, so it’s no surprise the game is getting a lot of attention.

Similar to Fallout Season 2, Fallout: New Vegas is set in the area around post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. It’s often considered the best Fallout game by players, largely because of its in-depth role-playing mechanics, intricate storylines with different factions, and the incredible freedom it gives you to make choices. Many fans believe it’s better than Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, which were developed by Bethesda, the main studio behind the Fallout series.

Some Fallout fans think Bethesda doesn’t appreciate Obsidian’s *Fallout: New Vegas* because Bethesda rarely mentions the game or its contributions to the Fallout story in their own games. While there’s no actual evidence to support this, the idea arose during debates about which Fallout games are best and has stuck around ever since.

In a recent conversation with PC Gamer, Todd Howard, director and executive producer at Bethesda, clarified a common misunderstanding. He stated that Bethesda and the developers of New Vegas have a good relationship and that rumors suggesting they are distant are false.

Todd Howard expressed high praise for the team at Obsidian Entertainment, sharing that he invited them to view footage of the upcoming *Fallout* Season 2. He also highlighted their successful year, pointing to the planned 2025 releases of *Avowed*, *Grounded 2*, and *The Outer Worlds 2* from Xbox and Obsidian.

He continued, explaining that they had specifically requested this from the team, and they delivered an absolutely fantastic game.

Earlier in the interview, Howard explained how New Vegas was developed and suggested that disagreements among fans about the best Fallout games likely led to misunderstandings about its origins. He attributed these misunderstandings to fans debating which games in the series are superior.

After making Fallout 3, we knew we wanted to create Skyrim. We’ve always had a great relationship with the team at Obsidian and really admire their work. So, we approached them and asked if they’d be interested in developing a new game that would build on what we’d started with Fallout 3, as a sort of spin-off.

Fans often debate which version of the game is their favorite, and that’s completely understandable. It’s great to see people connect with different iterations – whether it’s the original, a sequel, or a newer version like the Vegas or 76 editions. Having these ‘factions’ of fans who each prefer a different game is really positive for the franchise.

I’ve never understood the claim that Bethesda ignores Fallout: New Vegas. It’s a shame that false information like this spreads so quickly, because there’s really no evidence to support it.

It’s positive that Howard has responded to the claims directly, and hopefully that will put the matter to rest. However, some people will likely continue to believe he wasn’t truthful, which is understandable. Considering Bethesda’s significant involvement with the new TV show, which features the setting for New Vegas Season 2, this assumption seems unlikely to be true.

All Fallout games, including Fallout: New Vegas, are playable with an Xbox Game Pass subscription on either Xbox consoles or PC.
