In the world of the Pokemon television series, Ash Ketchum has amassed an impressive collection of various Pokemon throughout his journey. Over time, he’s taken weaker starters and molded them into formidable combatants within the show’s 24 seasons. His team boasts prominent figures like Pikachu, Lucario, Infernape, and Greninja, but it’s worth noting that many of Ash’s Pokemon pale in comparison to his top performers.
Although Ash has managed to collect many strong Pokémon throughout his journey due to his ambition of catching them all, some underperforming Pokémon consistently held back his overall victory record. These Pokémon didn’t contribute much to Ash’s battle history as they either demonstrated poor performance in battles, seemed unenthusiastic about fighting, or Ash himself lacked the necessary skills to train them effectively. Often, these weaker Pokémon would remain out of the spotlight during crucial moments in the competition. Even when given the opportunity, they often faltered against relatively weak opponents, leading spectators to question their potential if properly developed.
10) Tauros
In an episode of the original Kanto series that’s now forbidden, Ash caught thirty Tauros. However, only one was utilized in significant battles; the rest, which are housed at Professor Oak’s lab, seldom saw action during Ash’s adventures due to lack of combat experience.
Despite having just one Tauros out of many, Ash’s use of this Pokémon shone particularly during his battle against Drake, the Orange League Champion. In this match, Tauros managed to overcome Drake’s Venusaur before eventually losing to his Dragonite. Unfortunately, its third and final recorded battle also ended in defeat, as it was swiftly overpowered by Gary’s Nidoqueen during the Silver Conference.
9) Snivy
Despite starting off with high hopes due to Ash’s enthusiasm for Snivy, the Grass-type Pokemon didn’t show much improvement in battle skills compared to other members of his team. Even though many of her opponents weren’t exceptionally powerful, Snivy struggled to secure significant victories after defeating Clay’s Palpitoad during her debut. Matters took a turn for the worse following Tepig’s evolution, with Snivy suffering notable losses against Cameron’s Lucario, Clay’s Excadrill, and Elesa’s Emolga.
Due to Ash having a large team of Pokémon from the Unova region, Snivy wasn’t given enough attention and training compared to Pokémon like Bulbasaur or Rowlet. This was because Snivy mainly relied on the move Attract, which hindered her offensive strategies against female opponents who were immune to this ability.
8) Lapras
On Tangelo Island, Ash initially encountered Lapras, a creature being harassed by a gang of boys. Though Ash intervened to shield it, Lapras was wary of people due to past mistreatment, finding it hard to trust. Over time, Ash managed to win its confidence, and eventually, Lapras became part of his group. Primarily, it served as a means of transport through the Orange Islands, but it only occasionally engaged in challenges and rarely participated in open fights.
Lapras’ poor performance can primarily be attributed to its brief tenure with Ash and its youth when he caught it. Throughout its time on his team, it failed to secure a clear win, with its most notable achievement being a double knockout against Drake’s Gengar. This string of losses might also be connected to its restricted repertoire of moves, as it was often depicted using only Ice Beam and Water Gun in battles.
7) Totodile
Although Ash’s Totodile is charming and amusing to observe, its combat skills are somewhat weak. In a team that wasn’t particularly exceptional to begin with, Totodile didn’t make a significant impact, only managing one notable win throughout its time with Ash. That one exceptional moment, defeating Harrison’s Sneasel, was impressive, but it occurred in a battle that Ash ultimately lost.
In the Johto era, Ash’s Totodile only managed a single Pokémon victory that didn’t stand out, suggesting his inexperience as a trainer at the time. This underperformance was due to its poor win rate and uninspired move selections. With a limited moveset consisting of Scratch, Bite, Water Gun, Headbutt, Scary Face, and Slash, it’s understandable why Totodile often found itself losing battles.
6) Oshawott
Ash’s Unova team, although significant due to sentimental attachment, often struggles in battles due to a lack of adequate training for many of its members, hindering their potential evolution and performance. While not the most glaring example, Ash’s Oshawott, his Water-type Starter, has been less successful compared to others in this regard.
Oshawott’s main issue lies in its struggle to master its own move set. For instance, it might use Aqua Jet with closed eyes or become distracted when not using its chest shell. Notable losses include fights against Trip’s Tranquill, Lenora’s Watchog, Chili’s Fire-type Pansear, and Cameron’s Hydreigon. Additionally, Oshawott never evolved, remaining in its initial form throughout. To make matters worse, its limited range of types and rigid move set make it less effective in battle.
5) Palpitoad
Among all Pokemon series characters, Palpitoad is generally considered the weakest and least powerful member of Ash’s team. In its beginning form, it’s paired with a stronger Water-type Pokemon and rarely receives training. Moreover, it doesn’t often win fights it participates in. Additionally, Palpitoad exhibits an unfriendly demeanor, often appearing grumpy, irritable, or even hostile towards fellow travelers. Consequently, many fans view Palpitoad as one of Ash’s less memorable Pokemon due to its frequent displays of discontent.
In battles, I noticed that Palpitoad wasn’t often utilized by Ash and didn’t particularly stand out within his team. However, during his gym battle against Elesa, the Nimbasa City gym leader, Palpitoad was his key strategy. He opted to engage in the fight with just Palpitoad, leaving no backup Pokémon behind. Unfortunately, when Palpitoad was defeated, Ash had to dash to the Pokémon Center mid-battle to reinforce his team.
4) Unfezant
In each Pokémon series, Ash acquires and fully evolves a new regional bird creature. Generally speaking, Unfezant, among Ash’s Flying-type Pokémon from different regions like Swellow, Staraptor, and Talonflame, garners less enthusiasm from the audience and achieves fewer noteworthy feats. This might be due to Unfezant being noticeably less effective in battles compared to other flying-type Pokémon.
Among all the battles Ash’s Pokemon from Unova team participated in, Unfezant’s sole major win was against Skyla’s Swanna. Yet, in most other encounters, she ends up losing. The battle where Unfezant looked the most outclassed was against Cameron’s Riolu, a Flying-type Pokemon that hadn’t even evolved, which is quite surprising given Unfezant should have had an advantage against it.
3) Boldore
Among Ash’s less powerful Pokemon from Unova region, Boldore distinguished itself by possessing a substantial untapped ability. During the fight against Clay’s Excadrill at the Gym, it truly shone as Ash’s first Rock-type Pokemon and demonstrated a capacity to one day transform into the formidable Gigalith. However, similar to many of Ash’s other Unova Pokemon, Boldore’s evolution was regrettably stalled, leaving it undersdeveloped and far from its maximum potential.
Similarly to other companions in Ash’s Unova squad, Boldore wasn’t often involved in battles. Its only significant win was against Clay’s Excadrill, while its other victories were hardly noticeable. In fact, Boldore experienced more defeats than victories. With the right training, it could have been as powerful as Krookodile, but unfortunately, it faded into obscurity instead.
2) Butterfree
In episode 21 of the Kanto series, many viewers tearfully watched as Ash let his beloved Butterfree go to be with a pink one it had developed feelings for. This marked one of the anime‘s initial poignant goodbyes. However, Ash’s journey with Butterfree was not without challenges, as the bug-type Pokémon often lost battles during their training together.
In episode 21 of the Kanto series, fans wept in front of their TVs as Ash released his cherished Butterfree to be with a pink one it was infatuated with. This was one of the anime’s first emotional goodbyes. Unfortunately, Ash’s time with Butterfree was tough, as the bug-type Pokémon typically lost battles during their training sessions.
Initially, as Caterpie, this bug could only manage to beat Team Rocket. Subsequently, to overcome Pinsir, it had to endure intense hardships while in its Metapod form – a strategy that might not have fared well in actual Pokémon combat. By the time it evolved into Butterfree, it had almost always lost in Pokémon battles. It even lost against Misty during the gym battle, tied with a trainer’s Raticate, and was overpowered by the colossal Tentacruel.
1) Pidgeot
During Ash’s journey through Kanto, his trusted flying companion, Pidgeot, stood by him faithfully. This Pokémon evolved while defending a flock of Pidgey from the aggressive Fearow. Despite being injured during its struggle against Fearow, it demonstrated hidden strength before its evolution. However, in battles, Pidgeot did not manage to secure any victories. Still, its heroic deeds made it one of Ash’s most memorable Pokémon from that time period.
This Pokémon’s combat history is marked by a defeat against Team Rocket initially, followed by losses against a Pinsir and Koga’s Venomoth. Its Rhydon from the Viridian Gym was the only opponent it managed to deal damage to. Unfortunately, its move set was limited, with attacks like Double-Edge, Whirlwind, Quick Attack, and Gust offering little strategic advantage. In summary, while this Pokémon has an intriguing past, it failed to realize its full potential due to a lack of significant victories, earning itself a reputation as one of Ash’s less successful Pokémon.
