The highly anticipated MMORPG Ashes of Creation, which launched in Early Access on Steam last December, is facing trouble. Director Steven Sharif and several key developers have left Intrepid Studios, and Margaret Krohn confirmed on LinkedIn that the entire team was laid off. Sharif stated his resignation was a protest against decisions made by the studio’s board, which he felt were unethical.
Sharif explained on the Ashes of Creation Discord server (as reported by PCGamesN) that he lost control of the company and the Board started making decisions he found unethical. He chose to resign because he didn’t want to be associated with those decisions. After his resignation, many other top leaders also left the company, and the Board then decided to lay off a large number of employees, issuing WARN Act notices as a result.
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act is a US law that makes companies with 100 or more workers give 60 days’ notice before large layoffs.
Because of current legal and internal reviews, I’m unable to share more specifics right now. However, I want to say that the people who worked on this project acted honestly and with good intentions, and they don’t deserve the current instability. I’m very disappointed with how things have unfolded.
In a recent LinkedIn post, Sarah Krohn expressed her gratitude to the Ashes of Creation community for their support throughout the game’s lengthy development. She praised them as one of the most passionate and dedicated player bases she’s encountered in the industry, adding that she wished she could have done more. Krohn shared that she gave her all and did the best she could with the resources available. She also admitted she didn’t anticipate how things would ultimately unfold, stating she was caught off guard by the situation. Despite the unexpected outcome, she’s choosing to focus on the positive experiences and memories created during the project.
Players who purchased an Early Access version of Ashes of Creation and are seeking refunds should know that Steam is looking into the problem. A player on Reddit noticed that when they requested a refund, Steam responded saying they were already aware of the issue.
A Steam support representative responded, saying they were sorry to hear about the problem and understood why I was concerned. They confirmed they knew about the issue and were looking into it.
Recent departures from the development team have caused a wave of negative reviews for the MMO Ashes of Creation on Steam, bringing the overall rating to “Mostly Negative.” Many players are worried the game might be shutting down. However, Intrepid Studios has released a statement from the game director, announcing they will discuss the future of development in a livestream on Twitch on February 13th at 11AM PST.
We’ll be covering a range of issues, including problems with how the game runs and its reliability, bugs affecting both content and the system itself, difficulties with caravans and crates, balancing risk and reward in gameplay, player-versus-player combat and corrupted items, and the negative effects of real-money trading, bots, and cheating.
