It appears that Ubisoft may soon officially unveil a remastered or remade version of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, according to a recent update on its Steam database entry by user TheHiddenOneAC. This update has added new features to the game that it did not previously possess, hinting at potential updates or a new release.
The latest additions offer Custom Volume Controls, Stereo Sound, Surround Sound, a Mouse-Only Mode, Adjustable Difficulty, and the ability to Save at any time. Notably, this database alteration occurred on July 8th. To provide some background, previous significant updates to the database entry have primarily focused on incorporating fresh trailers and screenshots onto the store page.
It’s important to point out that instead of creating a fresh page for a possible remake or remaster, changes were made to the Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag page on Steam by Ubisoft. This could suggest that they intend to overwrite the existing Steam listing with the new version altogether, which might be concerning for those who value video game preservation.
Essentially, it’s generally unfavorable when you can’t obtain the original versions of a game because not all revamped or upgraded editions are top-notch. This is demonstrated by the contentious launch of the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, as sometimes the original games provide a better experience compared to poorly executed remasters or remakes that can be riddled with bugs. In terms of GTA, the Definitive Edition‘s release means that you can no longer legally purchase through Steam the beloved titles, namely GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas.
Concerning Black Flag, the last hint about a remake or remaster we received was when its protagonist Edward Kenway’s voice actor, Matt Ryan, suggested that there might be a new game on the horizon. During an autograph signing session, Ryan subtly hinted at this by asking a fan if they had completed the game. When the fan admitted to having played it some time ago, Ryan playfully mentioned that the fan “may have to beat it again.” He also added cryptically that “there’s a reason I say that but I can’t say anything,” which suggests that an announcement could be imminent, although Ryan is bound by non-disclosure agreements and cannot reveal too many details.
Originally launched in 2013 across PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 platforms, “Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag” was a cherished game that functioned as a prequel to “Assassin’s Creed 3”. Set during the Pirate Golden Age, “Black Flag” continues the series’ tradition of incorporating real-life figures such as the notorious pirate Edward Teach, popularly known as Blackbeard. The narrative revolves around the character Kenway, who initially tries to swindle people for money but unknowingly becomes embroiled in larger conspiracies than he had anticipated.
Previously, officially-approved merchandise creator Pure Arts hinted at an upcoming remake for “Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag.” However, Ubisoft has been rather quiet about the project, as the most recent major release in the “Assassin’s Creed” series was “Shadows,” which came out on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S earlier this year.
Just stumbled upon some fresh updates on Steam for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag! Seems like these new features are exclusive to the remake, as none of them were present in the original game. For instance, I couldn’t find any difficulty setting or manual saving option last time I played. Excited to see what else is in store for this updated version!
