Assassin’s Creed 4 Remake Will Reportedly Make Big, Controversial Changes to the Gameplay

The upcoming remake of *Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag* is expected to include significant changes that may not please everyone. The *Assassin’s Creed* series is Ubisoft’s most successful franchise because it’s popular and can tell countless stories throughout history. While some *Assassin’s Creed* games are better received than others, the series generally delivers what fans want: large, open worlds to explore, long storylines, and, more recently, lots of collectible items and RPG-style gameplay that lets players customize their experience.

Since the release of *Assassin’s Creed Origins* in 2018, the series has become more complex, which some players have welcomed while others miss the simpler games of the past. That’s why many fans were excited by the news that Ubisoft is remaking *Assassin’s Creed 4*, a fan-favorite and one of the last titles before the series shifted towards role-playing games. With its vast open world and focus on pirate ship exploration, *Assassin’s Creed 4* feels like a perfect candidate for a remake on modern consoles.

Assassin’s Creed 4 Remake Will Reportedly Cut the Modern Day Storyline, Add RPG Elements

Ubisoft is significantly updating *Assassin’s Creed 4* with a remake, and recent details have emerged. According to Jeux Vidéo Magazine (shared on Reddit), the new version will lean more heavily into RPG elements, featuring combat similar to newer *Assassin’s Creed* titles. Players will also be able to collect loot and gear with varying stats, managed through an inventory system, for the character Edward Kenway.

The updated map will be the same size as before, but each island will offer more things to do and explore. The remake will include content that was originally cut from the game, but it will also remove the entire modern-day storyline where players worked for Abstergo. Instead, they’ll add a few hours of new gameplay focused on the character Edward.

This isn’t a typical remake like those seen in *Silent Hill 2* or the *Resident Evil* series. Instead, it’s a fresh take on the original, built with the modern gameplay and technology of recent *Assassin’s Creed* games. Ubisoft is also using some of the technology created for their cancelled game *Skull and Bones* to help keep development costs down, but they assure fans this won’t be noticeable in the final product.

We don’t currently know when we’ll get more information about the *Assassin’s Creed 4* remake, but rumors suggest it might launch in early 2026, potentially slipping to late 2026. If that timeframe is accurate, we could see an announcement at The Game Awards or sometime in November. Ubisoft has a history of quickly revealing and releasing spin-off games like *Far Cry Primal* and *Far Cry New Dawn*, and a similar pattern could happen with this remake.
