Assassin’s Creed Development Veteran is Now Game Director at Rocksteady Studios

It’s become quite clear, albeit not officially confirmed, that Rocksteady is developing a new Batman game. Recently, it appears development efforts are intensifying, as discovered by ArkhamVideos on social media. Interestingly, Rocksteady Studios has appointed Bill Money as the new game director, according to his LinkedIn profile which shows he’s been working with them since July, though an official announcement is still pending.

Money boasts a varied background in gaming, having previously worked for multiple companies. His latest employment was with Ubisoft Singapore where he contributed to several projects such as Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, its DLC The Siege of Paris, and Assassin’s Creed Origins. In his earlier career, Money also participated in developing various titles including classic versions like the PS2 adaptation of Deus Ex, and both PC and Xbox editions of Deus Ex: Invisible War.

As a dedicated gamer, I stumbled upon a job listing back in March that hinted at Rocksteady’s upcoming Batman game being a cross-generation release. That means we can expect it on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and whatever future-gen consoles might pop up. With this information, it seems like we’re looking at a wait of three to four years before we can get our hands on the title. This delay is due to not only new consoles hitting the market but also continued support for the current gen systems.

Rocksteady’s latest project follows their recent work on the title “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” a game that WB Games deemed commercially unsuccessful. However, DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have mentioned discussions with Rocksteady, as well as NetherRealm Studios (the developers of Mortal Kombat and Injustice), about their upcoming projects.

Following the release of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” which was a commercial flop according to WB Games, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have reportedly been in talks with Rocksteady and NetherRealm Studios regarding their forthcoming projects.)

In February, Safran mentioned their tight collaboration with JB Perrette, who oversees the division. This is a unique arrangement at Warner Bros., as James and I often meet with the studio heads reporting to JB, be it NetherRealm or Rocksteady. We discuss characters and stories that intrigue us, as well as them.

In simpler terms, Gunn discusses exchanging ideas with the production houses regarding the current status of their ongoing projects and potential upcoming ones. It’s important to mention that many of these discussions probably focus on video games that are still in the initial stages of development.

According to Gunn, “the designs for our projects are in their most basic form at this point.” He continues, “We discuss these ideas, contemplate the narrative and sometimes suggest, ‘Perhaps it would be interesting to explore this direction as we may develop a particular character further.’

It’s been reported that the underperformance of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” led to a wave of layoffs at Rocksteady. Additionally, there were rumors suggesting that the studio was considering returning to single-player game development following its struggles with live-service multiplayer titles. Notably, Rocksteady is renowned for its single-player games like the “Batman: Arkham” series.
