Ubisoft has done a better job than many other game companies at making older games work well on newer computers and consoles. They’ve consistently improved games from the previous generation to ensure they run smoothly on modern hardware. Now, after years of requests from fans, Ubisoft is finally updating Assassin’s Creed Unity, a game that often sparked debate.
In a recent blog post discussing the future of the game, Ubisoft announced that Assassin’s Creed Unity will receive a performance update on March 5th, bringing a smooth 60 frames per second experience to both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. From April 2nd to 6th, Xbox players will be able to try the updated game for free as part of Xbox Free Play Days. While Unity already runs at 60fps on Xbox Series X|S thanks to the FPS Boost feature, this new update will likely improve more than just the frame rate.
Ubisoft Has a Long History With Current-Gen Updates

Ubisoft hasn’t shared much about what to expect with this update, but the folks at Digital Foundry, who really know their tech, looked at Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – the last game to get a similar patch. They said it runs at what they call “soft 4K” and had a few dropped frames here and there, even on the PS5 Pro. Still, it mostly stayed smooth at 60 frames per second. Because of that, a lot of us were worried Unity might have similar problems when it gets updated.
Both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which also received updates for newer consoles, ran much more smoothly. According to Digital Foundry, these games usually maintained 60 frames per second, hitting that target almost flawlessly. They adjust the resolution dynamically, so players on Xbox Series X get a full 4K experience, while the PlayStation 5 version reaches a maximum resolution of 1620p.
While modern computers can now run the game Unity at a smooth 60 frames per second, you have to play the original 1.0 version to achieve this. That’s only really convenient for players who still have the physical game disc. However, doing so means missing out on all the improvements and bug fixes that came after the game’s difficult launch. A few other games, such as The Last Guardian and Batman: Arkham City, also offer unlocked frame rates in their older versions.
Several older Assassin’s Creed games – Syndicate, Odyssey, Origins, and Unity – are now performing well on today’s consoles. That leaves just a few titles needing updates: Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection, Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered, Assassin’s Creed Rogue Remastered, and Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. On PlayStation 5, these games are limited to 30 frames per second, but Xbox Series X|S players can enjoy them at 60 frames per second, with the exception of Black Flag (and the original Assassin’s Creed game). With a remake of Black Flag recently announced, it might not need an update for current-generation consoles.
Ubisoft has extended this practice to many of its games, including For Honor, Far Cry 3: Classic Edition, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon Classic Edition, Far Cry Primal, Far Cry 4, Far Cry 5, Far Cry New Dawn, The Crew 2, The Division, The Division 2, and Ghost Recon Breakpoint. While some games like Watch Dogs and Watch Dogs 2 haven’t received these updates, many of Ubisoft’s most popular titles are still being improved, with updates for three Far Cry games arriving just recently. This ongoing series of patches gives players reason to believe their other favorite games might receive similar enhancements in the future.
