As a long-time fan of the Assassin’s Creed series, I’ve grown accustomed to the intricate historical settings and rich narratives that Ubisoft brings to life. However, the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set in Feudal Japan, has sparked concerns regarding historical accuracy, particularly with the depiction of Yasuke, a real-life samurai from the Sengoku period.
The anticipation for “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” is immense due to its Feudal Japan backdrop and innovative stealth features. However, there are valid concerns about the game’s overall accuracy. Among these issues is the portrayal of Yasuke, a historical samurai who once served under Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku era.
The development team has spoken to their “Japanese audience” (as translated by VGC) in a fresh communication, acknowledging and addressing your concerns, as well as others, alongside us. We are just as enthusiastic about history as you are and value the significance of preserving the historical and cultural authenticity of your valuable legacy.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “I’ve always made it clear that the Assassin’s Creed games, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, aren’t meant to be historically accurate. Instead, my goal is to ignite your curiosity and inspire you to delve deeper into the fascinating historical backgrounds that serve as our inspiration.”
Ubisoft acknowledged that certain aspects of our promotional content have raised concerns within the Japanese community. We deeply regret any offense caused by this. Specifically, we are referring to the unauthorized use of the flag of the Sekigahara Teppo-tai re-enactment group in concept art. Although Ubisoft has apologized and ceased using the flag, the group has requested its removal from the physical Collector’s Edition art book as well.
The developer added that although numerous individuals were consulted during the game’s creation, they hold no accountability for the creative team’s gameplay and entertainment choices. Kindly avoid targeting “our partners, whether in-house or external,” with any criticism.
As a gamer, I’d say: Regarding Yasuke’s creative portrayal and historical representation in “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” I want to address this topic openly. While Yasuke is shown as a samurai in the game, it’s important to remember that this is still up for debate among historians and gamers alike. We, the developers, have delicately integrated this into our storyline. And let me tell you, alongside our other significant character, Naoe, the Japanese shinobi, we offer players two distinct gameplay experiences with our dual protagonists.
The new installation of “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” is set to be released on November 15th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and personal computers. Contrary to some criticism, early sales figures indicate a robust demand for the game. Further information will be shared as it becomes available.
The Assassin’s Creed Shadows team has a message for our Japanese community.
