Ubisoft and Nintendo have a long-standing partnership, with Ubisoft often creating games specifically for Nintendo consoles. In a recent interview, Ubisoft shared that they’re assisting Nintendo in enhancing variable refresh rate (VRR) support for other games on the upcoming Switch 2. They’ve previously discussed how they implemented VRR in the Switch 2 version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and in a new conversation with FRVR, they explained the specific methods used, including a custom algorithm.
Ubisoft has explained that both Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws will utilize a feature on the new Switch 2 console that smooths gameplay, even when the frame rate drops below 40 frames per second.
Because Shadows aims for 30 frames per second, and the console’s variable refresh rate (VRR) only functions at 40Hz or faster, we had to get creative. We essentially show the same image twice within each refresh cycle – once halfway through and again at the end. This makes the console output at 60Hz while still keeping the game looking smooth.
Ubisoft has confirmed the technology enabling Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) on the Switch 2 is now integrated into their Anvil Engine – the foundation for all their current games. This means future titles, potentially including the anticipated Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Resynced, will also benefit from this feature and are likely to be released on the Switch 2 as well.
Ubisoft is also still collaborating with Nintendo to make VRR work even better in the future.
Ubisoft has launched Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws on the new Nintendo Switch 2, but it’s unclear if they plan to release another popular game, Rainbow Six Siege X, on the system as well.
Back in October, creative director Alexander Karpazis explained that the game wasn’t being developed for additional platforms at that time. However, he left the door open to a possible Nintendo console release, stating that anything could happen in the future.
Our main priority is always improving the experience on the platforms we currently support and ensuring any new gameplay features take full advantage of them. Expanding to new platforms isn’t a current focus, but as a live game that’s been running for ten years, we never rule anything out. We’ll continue to evaluate new opportunities as platforms evolve and change.
Ubisoft recently announced that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is doing better than expected. According to their latest financial report, the game’s success is due to updates released after launch, including a free New Game+ update and the Claws of Awaji expansion.
So, Ubisoft told us that people are really into Assassin’s Creed right now. They said we’ve all spent a combined 211 million days playing the games, which is a huge 35% jump compared to what they usually see. Basically, we’re playing a lot more Assassin’s Creed than we used to!
