Assassin’s Creed Shadows Will Not be Getting Discovery Mode

Ubisoft has announced that the upcoming game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, will not include the fan-favorite feature, Discovery Tour, which was a part of previous games in the franchise. This revelation was made during an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit where developers addressed questions from fans. Specifically, it was stated that at this time, there are no plans for a Japan-themed Discovery Tour similar to what Assassin’s Creed Valhalla received for the Viking Age.

Instead, the developer shared that they chose to integrate educational content and historical background within the game’s Historical Codex itself. As a result, players can delve into the rich history of the Sengoku-era Japanese period portrayed in Assassin’s Creed Shadows without leaving the game to access a separate Discovery Tour mode.

In the game ‘Shadows’, we’re planning to seamlessly incorporate the Historical Codex right into the core game, making it easily accessible for all players. This is different from games such as ‘Odyssey’ or ‘Valhalla’, where additional historical data may only be found within extra sections.

In other words, at this moment, we don’t plan on offering a ‘Japan Discovery Tour’, similar to what we previously created for the ‘Viking Age’.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but rave about the Discovery Tour – an enlightening game mode that made its grand entrance in 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins. This feature invites players like me to delve deep into the rich worlds of the Assassin’s Creed universe, offering historical insights and intriguing details about the eras and characters portrayed in these epic games. With Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and later Valhalla also boasting their very own Discovery Tours, history buffs like me are given an immersive and educational adventure!

Ever since its introduction, the Discovery Tour mode has garnered much acclaim due to the meticulous attention to detail, not just in the Assassin’s Creed games, but also in the educational content woven within them. This mode has even been utilized in certain classrooms to supplement history lessons with additional details and vivid visual context.

This year, “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” was launched on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. The game has been a major success, with over 5 million players as of July. Given its development budget of over €100 million, this success is undoubtedly a positive outcome. For more information about the game, read our review.

Although Assassin’s Creed Shadows won’t have a standalone Discovery Mode, it doesn’t imply that Ubisoft isn’t developing additional content for the game. In fact, the game is set to receive its first narrative expansion, Claws of Awaji, on September 16. This expansion comes at no extra cost if you pre-ordered Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, you can only enjoy this new content once you’ve completed the main storyline of the base game.

The title has received its due share of updates following its launch, which not only rectify issues but also offer additional content. For instance, an update in July included a New Game+ mode and rewards for finishing it, along with a new Animus Rift that players can work on completing once they’ve unlocked Yasuke within the game’s narrative.
