Assassin’s Creed Unity’s PS5 Patch Is Put to the Test, with Some Surprising Results

Ubisoft recently released a significant update for Assassin’s Creed Unity, a PlayStation 4 game from over ten years ago, and players have responded very positively.

This update improved how the game runs on PS5 when played from a PS4 disc. It unlocked the frame rate and increased the resolution, making the game look and play much better.

The initial PS4 version of the game had a lot of performance issues, including noticeable slowdowns and visual glitches. While it took Ubisoft nearly 12 years to fix these problems, the recent update finally delivers a smooth and polished experience.

The experts at Digital Foundry seem to share a similar view, though their detailed technical analysis revealed some noteworthy details.

For starters, this so-called 4K, 60fps update isn’t actually 4K.

The PlayStation 5 version has a noticeably sharper image than the PlayStation 4 version, which was quite blurry. However, it doesn’t quite reach true 4K resolution, rendering at around 2304×1296. This seems like a deliberate choice to maintain smooth performance.

The situation is similar on the PS5 Pro, but the more powerful graphics card seems to deliver a smoother and more stable experience.

While the PlayStation 5 Pro achieves the highest frame rates on each console, Digital Foundry suggests that Xbox Series X provides the best overall gaming experience when playing Unity games.

This is thanks to the Xbox’s ability to play games from older consoles. The game looks better on the Series X, with a resolution of 2880×1620, and feels much smoother thanks to a technology that synchronizes the game’s frame rate with your TV’s refresh rate.

Honestly, I’ve noticed that no matter where you try to run a Unity game – on a powerful PC or a mobile device – the frame rate just doesn’t seem to stay consistent. It’s something you’ll probably see no matter what.

According to Digital Foundry, the game generally runs at a smooth 50 to 60 frames per second. However, performance drops during cutscenes – which use a lot of blurry depth of field – and when there are many characters on screen at once.

This overview largely matches what we discussed a few weeks ago in our first look at Assassin’s Creed Unity on the PS5.

If you’re looking for an Assassin’s Creed game that feels more like the classic titles, with a focus on parkour, it’s definitely worth checking out Unity again. While the update isn’t flawless, it significantly improves a game that was originally a big letdown.
