As a long-time platformer enthusiast who has been following the gaming industry for decades, I must admit that my excitement levels for Astro Bot are through the roof! The tantalizing glimpses we’ve had so far have left me confident that this game will be a fantastic addition to the platforming genre.
2024 appears to be an atypical year for PlayStation, as major single-player blockbusters from their first-party studios are absent this year. However, while notable characters such as Ellie, Kratos, Jin Sakai, Peter Parker, and others are on a break from the PlayStation scene, other games are stepping in to take their place. In fact, there’s a surge of smaller first-party games being released for the PS5, even among these “smaller” titles, one game stands out as a significant offering.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been hooked on Astro Bot ever since his debut in The Playroom back in 2013. From there, he stole hearts with Astro Bot Rescue Mission for PS VR and even helped usher in the new console generation with Astro’s Playroom on PS5. This charming robot has been a fan favorite for nearly a decade now, and it’s no wonder that the anticipation for his first full-fledged console game is as high as it is.
Reflect on this: When Astro Bot Rescue Mission initially debuted for the PlayStation VR in 2018, it was frequently praised as VR’s equivalent of Super Mario 64’s moment. Not only was it an outstanding platformer in its own league, but it also showcased the remarkable potential of a talented team even with the most restricted VR hardware. Later on, we were treated to Astro’s Playroom, which surpassed expectations for a game of its nature. Essentially, Astro’s Playroom was a tech demo bundled with every PS5 that showcased the DualSense’s unique characteristics exceptionally well, but it also turned out to be another enjoyable platformer in addition to this.
Team Asobi and Sony are set to unveil a standalone console game titled “Astro Bot”. Unlike its VR counterparts, this version will have the freedom to showcase its full creative potential as a premium $60 title. It’s no wonder that anticipation for Astro Bot is running high. Some have raised concerns about the game’s price tag, but we believe it offers more than enough content to justify the cost. Of course, the final decision on whether to spend $60 lies with each individual. However, Team Asobi has promised a 12-15 hour gaming experience, plans to offer free post-launch DLC, and has built a reputation for creating excellent games. Given these factors, it’s hard to imagine Astro Bot falling short of success.
Absolutely, there’s more than one factor fueling the excitement for Astro Bot. Its impressive history and its creator’s reputation for crafting superb platformers are certainly significant. However, what has also played a crucial role in turning it into one of the most eagerly awaited games of the year for many is the fact that every glimpse we’ve had of it so far has been nothing short of stunning. With over 80 levels spread across various galaxies, more than 15 unique abilities to employ against a variety of adversaries (many of which will be entirely new), and close to 300 bots to save (including numerous PlayStation cameos and Easter eggs), Astro Bot is making some truly appealing promises.
The game “Astro Bot” has notably fueled the excitement surrounding it due to its strong potential as a top-tier platformer and its promise of another adventure reminiscent of “Astro’s Playroom,” celebrating various aspects of PlayStation. Although the developers have suggested that this may not always be a defining aspect of the series, the possibility of seeing cameos, easter eggs, even whole levels from other PlayStation properties in Astro Bot has certainly added to our anticipation for its release.
As a gaming enthusiast who thoroughly enjoyed the immersive VR experience in Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, I must admit that I was hoping for another dose of that unique gameplay in the upcoming installment. However, it appears that this new chapter in the series will not be compatible with PS VR2, as it has been designed specifically for console gaming.
It’s undeniably intriguing when a substantial new 3D console platformer game is released, as such occurrences are rare in this industry. Apart from Nintendo and its popular Super Mario series, it’s challenging to identify other significant AAA franchises consistently relevant today. Perhaps Ratchet and Clank, though primarily known for its shooting aspects, can be considered an exception. Therefore, the launch of a full-fledged 3D console platformer from a first-party PlayStation studio is quite noteworthy. While Astro Bot may not become Sony’s Mario equivalent, it certainly has potential to match up!
Clearly, discussing the game before addressing its relevance is like putting the cart before the horse. Let’s get back on track and delve into the main subject – the intriguing game called Astro Bot. With its enchanting and vivid graphics, combined with the whimsical and imaginative elements displayed in its adversaries, environments, and level designs, Astro Bot appears to be a dream come true for fans of 3D platformers. It’s still uncertain whether it will reach the exceptional quality that typically places PlayStation first-party titles in annual game of the year discussions. However, based on Sony’s demonstrations so far, there’s every justification for hope.
