Astronaut Kellie Gerardi Gives Birth, Shares Baby’s Space-Themed Name

Kellie Gerardi’s next chapter is ready for takeoff. 

Astronaut and researcher welcomed her second daughter, Maxine Quinn, with her husband, Steven Baumruk. Like their older daughter, Delta Victoria, who is eight years old, Maxine’s name seems to honor a future in space exploration.

Kellie announced the successful birth of her daughter on Instagram on April 6th, sharing photos of the newborn. She happily introduced the baby, whose name is Maxine Quinn, and affectionately nicknamed her “Max Q,” adding, “Welcome to the world! You’re going to love it here.”

NASA explains that little Max’s unique name is inspired by a term for the point when a rocket experiences the most pressure during flight.

She isn’t the only one in the family with a science-inspired name. Kellie and Steven also named their 8-year-old after ‘Delta-v,’ which is a term used in physics to describe a change in speed.

After welcoming Maxine Earthside, Kellie detailed the moment she met her “Space Baby.”

Kellie shared a video on Instagram on April 5th celebrating the birth of her daughter, Maxine. She described the last two days as a wonderful whirlwind and expressed deep gratitude that they continued with IVF, ultimately completing their family. Kellie has previously been open about the challenges they faced with fertility.

Despite still being in pain and feeling completely drained – mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually – she expressed immense gratitude. She’s been touched by all the kind messages she’s received, and feels overwhelmed with love in a beautiful way. She wished everyone a happy Easter.

The 37-year-old shared in August that she is expecting a baby named Maxine. She described feeling hopeful but also anxious about the pregnancy, especially since she’d experienced four miscarriages in the past.

She shared a tearful video from her IVF clinic, but this time they were happy tears. The ultrasound showed a tiny flicker of life, which meant the world to her. While it’s still early and there’s a long way to go, she’s hopeful that she and her ‘cheerio-sized miracle’ will continue to thrive, and she might finally complete her IVF journey successfully.

Kellie, who has struggled with getting pregnant again, shared in a video that while she’s not completely out of the difficult period, she finally feels like she can relax a little. She ended with a hopeful message: ‘Grow, baby, grow!’
