Atari Acquires Classic Ubisoft IPs Cold Fear, Grow Up, Grow Home, Child of Eden and I Am Alive

Atari has recently revealed a partnership with Ubisoft, whereby Atari will obtain ownership over several smaller intellectual properties (IPs) that belong to Ubisoft. According to the announcement, the IPs being acquired by Atari encompass titles such as “I Am Alive”, “Cold Fear”, “Child of Eden“, “Grow Home”, and “Grow Up”.

For many years, countless gamers have explored these virtual worlds, and now we’re offering an opportunity for long-time players to reminisce about their past experiences while also welcoming newcomers to delve into them for the first time,” shared Deborah Papiernik from our New Business division. “Atari boasts a vast gaming history and cherishes these timeless classics. We’re thrilled to see how they’ll be modernized and resonate with players in innovative, impactful ways.

Through this acquisition, Atari aims to recreate the charm of smaller gaming experiences for a modern audience, with plans to launch these games on existing platforms using updated publishing structures. Additionally, they will reintroduce these games under their publishing brand while also working towards expanding their reach by creating new content and exploring broader distribution channels.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the captivating universes crafted by Ubisoft and Atari – realms that have left generations of gamers spellbound, not only because of their gameplay, but also due to the emotions they elicited within us. It’s a thrill to announce the return of these iconic titles, while simultaneously exploring avenues for growth and transformation in these cherished franchises.

In the past, all of Atari’s acquired intellectual properties have been largely inactive, with the latest launch being “Grow Up” in 2016 across PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The oldest of these purchased IPs is “Cold Fear,” initially released in 2005 for PC, PS2, and Xbox platforms.

Atari has significantly grown its business holdings, as announced in July. The agreement with Thunderful Group led to Atari acquiring approximately 82% of their shares and votes. This deal involved issuing €4.5 million worth of shares, creating 333,333,334 new ordinary shares. This announcement was made during a challenging financial period for Thunderful Group, resulting in them reducing their workforce by about 20%.

According to Rosen, this deal signifies another significant step forward in Atari’s evolution, as it broadens their publishing and development ventures within the European market. Thunderful, known for publishing and creating award-winning games, is expected to steer Atari back towards profitable growth with its transformation plan and the dedication of its teams. This partnership aims to strengthen Atari’s operations in Europe further.

Regarding Ubisoft, the gaming giant from France has recently established a new branch. Yves Guillemot’s son, Charlie Guillemot, will jointly lead this new venture with Christophe Derennes as co-CEOs. This new company is being launched as part of a €1.16 billion partnership between Ubisoft and Tencent.
