Aug 2025 USA Sales: Massive Month for Single Player Games, PS5 Can’t Catch Switch 2

August 2025 saw strong sales for single-player games, as both *Mafia: The Old Country* and *Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater* landed in the top four of the best-selling games across all platforms.

As expected, neither game surpassed NBA 2K26 or Madden NFL 26 in popularity. However, these results are still encouraging for players who enjoy single-player story modes.

Gears of War Reloaded launched on PS5 and performed very strongly, ranking sixth in both overall and PlayStation-specific sales charts. Because it was offered as a free upgrade for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, it didn’t appear on the Xbox charts.

The popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2 also didn’t rank among the top ten games on Xbox, which raises doubts about whether bringing it to Xbox was the right move. It’s currently unknown if sales numbers for the game are being reported to Circana, and that could be why it’s missing from the charts. Industry analyst Piscatella is looking into the situation.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles 2 saw a huge jump in popularity, moving from 24th to 10th place thanks to the success of The Infinity Castle movie. That movie has now earned over $600 million worldwide.

PlayStation 5 hardware sales dropped significantly compared to last year, and the Nintendo Switch 2 sold considerably more units this month.

The Nintendo Switch is currently selling even better than the PlayStation 4 did at this same point after its release, despite it being a typically slower sales season. Importantly, the Switch has been consistently well-stocked, making it readily available to customers.
