Fans were thrilled when the sequel, Kingdom Hearts II, arrived and proved to be a truly exceptional game. Released in North America on March 28, 2005, it built upon everything that made the first game special, offering larger worlds, more exciting combat, and a deeper, more impactful story. Despite its grand scope, the game felt surprisingly intimate and personal, delivering the kind of epic adventure that video games often strive for but rarely achieve. Even now, over twenty years later, Kingdom Hearts II is considered one of the greatest sequels of all time.

Just like a double-edged sword, a string of unsuccessful movies can often kill off an entire genre. While some genres bounce back after a few years – as seen with The Ballad of Snakes and Songbirds bringing back young adult dystopian stories over a decade after The Maze Runner, Divergent, Ender’s Game, The Giver, and the original Hunger Games – others seem to disappear for good. Here are five genres that appear to have faded away permanently.

Though it originally aired on UPN, the animated series Home Movies played a big part in launching Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Created by Brandon Small – who later became known for Metalocalypse – the show centers around a young Brandon and his efforts to create home movies while navigating everyday suburban life. After running for four seasons, a revival of the series feels very possible, as many of the original cast members are still working in animation.

I’ve been hearing a lot about this new miniatures game called Gundam Assemble. From what I understand, you’ll be leading a team of five Gundams against another player’s team in 5v5 battles, though they’ll also have 3v3 options. It looks like they’re launching with two Starter Sets, and there will be tons of different units available to build your dream team. Apparently, you’ll even find popular models like the Barbatas Lupus Rex and the RX782 Gundam in those starter sets (according to OnTableTop). The best part? It’s coming out this October, so we won’t have to wait long to try it out!

As a huge fan of the Harry Hole books, I’m really excited about this new series, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole. What’s got me especially hopeful is that Nesbø himself wrote it, meaning it feels much truer to the spirit of his novels than previous adaptations. The story kicks off with the fifth book, The Devil’s Star, and plunges you right into a terrifying case – a truly brutal killer is terrorizing Norway. But it’s not just the killer Harry’s up against; his old nemesis, Tom Waaler, is back, and he’s as crooked as ever. It’s a tense showdown between these two, with Harry fighting for justice and Waaler desperate to cover his tracks. Honestly, the stakes are incredibly high, and it’s a real struggle for Harry to not let his own demons get the better of him.

It’s more than just how the game plays, though. Engaging gameplay doesn’t mean sacrificing style. In fact, games in this genre should have strong graphics and a compelling story, and you can definitely have both.
