Despite its reputation, Scrubs Season 9 wasn’t a total disaster. While it struggled to find its footing, the season had some genuinely funny moments, and the new characters were surprisingly well-received. In fact, two actors from the original series have even expressed interest in bringing one of those Season 9 stars back for a potential revival.
The final season of Scrubs, often called Scrubs: Med School, brought back many of the show’s original actors. Originally planned as a spin-off, this 13-episode run actually led to the show being canceled in 2010. The season focused on a new group of interns, and the voice-over narration shifted from Zach Braff’s character, JD, to Kerry Bishé’s Dr. Lucy Bennett as JD’s role diminished. Today, sixteen years later, Scrubs: Med School isn’t considered part of the main series by many, as those episodes have been effectively removed from the show’s story. However, some fans still appreciate seeing those original cast members return.
Ava Bunn & Amanda Morrow Have Both Said They Want Dave Franco Back for the ‘Scrubs’ Revival
Dave Franco played Dr. Cole Aaronson in Scrubs: Med School, and it was an early, standout role for him. Although Cole started as a somewhat unlikeable character, he became a fan favorite in the ninth season. Recently, while speaking with cast members about the season’s legacy and its removal from the show’s official storyline, I learned that two of the new actors would be thrilled to work with Franco again if the opportunity arose.
Ava Bunn, who plays Dr. Sam Tosh on the new Scrubs revival, first mentioned the possibility of Dave Franco returning to the show. When asked about Season 9, she felt the revival was overshadowing the previously planned Med School season. She then wondered if Franco might reprise his role from Med School. “I was even thinking, what if Dave Franco came back?” Bunn said, playfully suggesting the idea. She also expressed her appreciation for the positive reception the revival has received.
When I spoke with Amanda Morrow, who plays Dr. Dashana Trainor, I asked about her thoughts on Dave Franco. She agreed with what Bunn had said, playfully suggesting, “Definitely bring Dave Franco back – I’d love to work with him again!” It seemed like a genuine desire. So, at least two people involved with the current Scrubs project are publicly in favor of Franco’s return, and it’s likely many more feel the same way.
Dave Franco Has Spoken Recently About His Fond Memories of Being on ‘Scrubs’

Recently, while speaking with On Demand Entertainment, James Franco discussed the possibility of returning to Scrubs. He explained it wasn’t his decision, but fondly remembered his time filming Med School and working with the original cast. Franco acknowledged that many fans didn’t enjoy Season 9, but still expressed his affection for the show. “I really love that Scrubs world and wish them all the best,” he said.
Dave Franco’s popularity has grown significantly since his role as Cole on Scrubs, making it potentially challenging to schedule him for a revival. The current plan seems to center on the original cast and the new interns, leaving limited room for additional appearances. However, he wouldn’t necessarily refuse if asked. So, Ava Bunn and Amanda Morrow are hopeful he might be available.
How a Dave Franco ‘Scrubs’ Comeback Could Work After the Season 9 Retcon

Given that the new season of Scrubs has only just begun, it’s understandable that a minor character like Cole hasn’t appeared yet. However, there’s still a chance he could show up if ABC orders more episodes. Although Season 9 is largely considered separate from the main story, making a return for Dave Franco’s character difficult, it’s not out of the question. Importantly, the revival has kept two key storylines from the original series alive – JD and Elliot’s marriage and their child – proving that some parts of Season 9 can still be incorporated into the show.
While it’s possible Franco could join the Scrubs revival with a new role, it wouldn’t quite live up to the potential of bringing back his original character.
The show Scrubs has become surprisingly complex, essentially offering two different continuities. After Season 8, viewers can either watch Season 9 or skip it and go straight to the revival episodes – both paths are considered official storylines. However, the timeline of the Med School episodes gets a little unclear after the Season 9 finale. Since the character Cole exists in Med School, he must have been around in some form during Season 8, even before he arrived at Sacred Heart. This opens the door for Franco’s character to potentially reappear in the revival. The Cole we’d see wouldn’t remember the events of Season 9, but bringing him back would be a creative way to explore an alternate path for his character – what if he hadn’t experienced everything that happened in Med School?
