Avatar: Fire and Ash Star Addresss the Most Awkward Scene of the Entire Sequel, and Why It Wasn’t Weird on Set

James Cameron wants the Avatar movies to unite audiences around a simple story: the Na’vi people of Pandora just want to live peacefully, but humans interfere, seeking to exploit the planet’s resources. This is the initial conflict, but Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar: Fire and Ash add complexity by focusing on Spider, a human boy raised by the Sully family after losing his parents, and his unique perspective.

Spider is noticeably different from the Na’vi, but he deeply wants to be accepted into their community and fully participate in their traditions. Acceptance takes time, so he finds companionship in Kiri, another outsider – a Na’vi born uniquely from an Avatar. The Sully family welcomes Kiri, and she and Spider connect over their shared experience of being different. Their bond eventually blossoms into a romantic relationship, which fits well within the story’s narrative.

The movie features a scene with a kiss between 76-year-old Sigourney Weaver and 21-year-old Jack Champion, who was even younger when he first filmed his parts for Fire and Ash. This has raised some eyebrows, but Weaver has assured everyone that nothing inappropriate happened during filming. She told The Hollywood Reporter that the production team found a way to handle the situation.

There was one scene in particular that required a lot of careful handling – the moment my character tells Jack’s, ‘You’re perfect just as you are,’ and it culminates in a kiss. Let me be clear: there was absolutely no way I was going to kiss the young actor playing Jack, who was still a teenager. To navigate that, we asked Jack himself to choose someone I could kiss, and he did. Then, I understand they found a suitable stand-in for him when I wasn’t on set. It was a legitimate concern, of course, and I was relieved it made it into the final cut. When I watched it, the connection felt completely real, and any worries about the age difference between us just melted away. It’s a genuinely touching moment.

Avatar 4‘s Time Jump Will Help the Audience Buy Spider and Kiri’s Relationship

Cameron was taking a risk by pairing Spider and Kiri, but he’s thinking long-term. He’s revealed that Avatar 4 will jump forward in time, aging the children, which should help Spider mature and handle his feelings for Kiri more easily. The only uncertainty is Cameron’s occasional suggestion that a fourth movie isn’t guaranteed. He’s said that discussion will happen after Fire and Ash finishes its theatrical run.
