Avatar: Fire & Ash is proving to be a massive hit at the box office, exceeding the opening weekend numbers of many other Disney films. Given the incredible success of the previous Avatar movies – both earning over $2 billion, with the first being the highest-grossing film ever – expectations for this third installment from James Cameron were very high. While it’s unrealistic to expect Fire & Ash to break that record, a successful run would mean coming close to the $2 billion mark.
While Avatar: Fire & Ash didn’t open quite as explosively as The Way of Water – earning $345 million worldwide in its first four days versus the previous film’s $435 million – it’s still a huge success. This is especially true considering most movies haven’t performed exceptionally well at the box office this year. According to Box Office Mojo, this opening puts it at number 17 among all 2025 releases so far, and it has already surpassed the total earnings of several movies released by Disney’s different studios.

How Much Will Avatar: Fire & Ash Make?
While the strong opening weekend box office for Avatar: Fire & Ash is noteworthy, it’s not the defining characteristic of an Avatar film. Nowadays, many movies are judged solely on their first weekend performance, but the Avatar franchise is known for maintaining strong ticket sales for weeks, especially during the holidays. This is often due to people seeing the film multiple times, frequently in premium formats like IMAX, and we could see that pattern repeat with this new installment.
There’s reason to be hopeful about how well Fire & Ash will do in theaters. Because it’s likely many people will choose to see it in IMAX – where fewer screenings are available – showings will likely sell out quickly, and the film should continue to perform strongly for a while.
With no major competing films released, movies like The Housemaid and Marty Supreme shouldn’t significantly impact Avatar’s box office performance. While initial reviews weren’t as strong as previous installments – it currently has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest for the franchise – audience reactions are very positive. Its 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore are similar to those of The Way of Water, suggesting strong potential for continued success.
Despite a high production cost of around $350-400 million, Fire & Ash is expected to be a major success at the box office. However, reaching $2 billion in total earnings might be challenging. The Way of Water earned 5.2 times its opening weekend revenue, demonstrating impressive staying power. If Fire & Ash performs similarly, it’s projected to earn close to $1.8 billion. To reach $2 billion, it would need to earn roughly 5.7 to 5.8 times its opening weekend—a difficult, but not impossible, achievement.
Looking at Disney films, this movie is predicted to be the highest-earning of 2025. Currently, five films rank higher, including three Marvel movies, the new Lilo & Stitch remake, and Zootopia 2 (see the table below). It’s expected to quickly surpass Marvel’s earnings in its second weekend and then move ahead of the remaining films, becoming Disney’s top earner and the biggest Hollywood movie of the year (currently the Zootopia sequel). However, becoming the overall highest-grossing film will be a challenge, as Ne Zha 2 currently leads with $1.9 billion in earnings.
