Avatar: Fire & Ash’s New Characters, Returning Cast & What The Na’vi Actors Really Look Like

The new movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is now playing in theaters. It returns viewers to the world of Pandora and continues the story of the Sully family. Picking up after the events of Avatar: The Way of Water, the film shows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) grieving the loss of their son Neteyam, who died fighting against the RDA and Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang).

The Sully family’s children – Kiri, Lo’ak, Tuk, and Spider – are all struggling to find their place. Their situation becomes even more dangerous when they encounter the Mangkwan clan, a Na’vi group who turned grief into rage and a thirst for violence. Guided by the enigmatic priestess Varang, the Mangkwan introduce a dangerous new force into the conflict for Pandora, potentially changing everything.

Here’s a look at the new and returning characters in Avatar: Fire and Ash, plus photos of the actors who brought them to life through performance capture technology.

Avatar: Fire & Ash’s New Characters, Returning Cast (& What The Na’vi Actors Really Look Like)

Oona Chaplin, known to many as Talisa Maegyr Stark from Game of Thrones – and unfortunately, for the shocking scene of her death at the Red Wedding – takes on a very different role in Avatar: Fire and Ash. She plays Varang, the powerful high priestess leading the Mangkwan clan, who worship fire. Unlike other Na’vi, Varang isn’t connected to Pandora’s nature and creatures; she only wants to cause death and destruction, and she has the power to control other Na’vi. This presents a challenge the Sully family isn’t expecting and isn’t ready to face.

David Thewlis, famous for playing Professor Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter films and Ares in Wonder Woman, appears in Avatar: Fire and Ash as Peylak. Peylak is the leader of the Na’vi Wind Traders, a new group introduced in the movie, and his part is expected to be larger in future Avatar sequels.

Sam Worthington returns as Jake Sully in the latest Avatar film. Having fully embraced life as a Na’vi, Jake is now struggling with the loss of a son, which has created distance between him and Neytiri. He finds himself projecting his grief onto their son, Lo’ak. When the relentless Colonel Quaritch returns and once again threatens his family, Jake is prepared to do whatever it takes – even break his own promises – to protect them.

Zoe Saldana plays Neytiri, a character who was once a strong warrior and protective mother. But after losing a child, she’s become consumed by anger and prejudice, even towards humans and her adopted son, Spider. Driven by a desire for revenge, she’s distanced herself from her family and beliefs. Facing a new enemy, Varang, forces Neytiri to confront how hatred and loss can change a person deep inside.

Stephen Lang plays Colonel Miles Quaritch, the ruthless military leader in charge of the RDA’s attempt to take over the Na’vi’s land. Though he was initially defeated and killed by Jake Sully and Neytiri, Quaritch came back in The Way of Water thanks to a program that transferred his consciousness into a Na’vi avatar body. This allowed him to continue his fight with Jake, tragically resulting in the death of Jake’s eldest son. Still driven by vengeance, Quaritch is also determined to reconnect with his own son, Miles “Spider” Socorro. He finds a powerful new ally in Varang and the fire tribe, giving him the support he needs to pursue both his goals: killing Jake Sully and reclaiming his son.

Jack Champion plays Spider, a human boy in The Way of Water who longs to be part of the Sully family. While the reveal that he’s the son of Quaritch didn’t have a huge impact in the first film, Spider’s story takes center stage in Fire and Ash. The third Avatar movie will significantly expand on his journey, exploring more than just his complicated relationship with his father.

Sigourney Weaver plays Kiri, a unique character with a fascinating backstory. Though Dr. Grace Augustine died in the first Avatar film, her spirit lived on within a Na’vi avatar and she miraculously had a child named Kiri. In The Way of Water, Kiri began to realize she had extraordinary, almost magical abilities thanks to her deep connection with Pandora’s life force, Eywa, allowing her to communicate with nature and animals. The upcoming Fire and Ash will explore Kiri’s desire to understand her powers and learn the truth about her birth, a secret that may hold the key to Pandora’s survival.

Britain Dalton plays Lo’ak in Avatar: The Way of Water, and the film subtly establishes him as the central character for this installment. In Fire and Ash, Lo’ak is still grieving the death of his brother, Neteyam (played by Jamie Flatters), and copes with the loss like many teenagers – by rebelling and trying to prove himself. However, when a new threat endangers his family, Lo’ak is determined to protect them and prevent another tragedy.

Kate Winslet plays Ronal, a strong and important character in the Avatar films. In The Way of Water, Ronal initially clashes with Neytiri but ultimately fights alongside her to defend her clan and their way of life against the RDA. Now, in Fire and Ash, Ronal is about to have a baby when a new, even greater danger appears. The story explores whether she will remain an ally to the Sully family, especially when their presence puts her clan and her own family at risk.

Cliff Curtis plays Tonowari, the strong-willed leader of the Metkayina clan in The Way of Water. While he bravely fought with Jake Sully against the RDA, the upcoming film Fire and Ash presents him with a difficult dilemma. Though he considers Sully a brother-in-arms, Tonowari is frustrated by Sully’s hesitation to fully unite the clans as Toruk Makto. With the RDA and a new fire clan posing increasing threats, Tonowari must make tough decisions to protect his people.

Matt Gerald returns as Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, the standout among the villainous characters. Having faithfully served Miles Quartich throughout all three Avatar films, Wainfleet’s primary objective in Fire and Ash is simply to survive – if he can.

CCH Pounder plays Mo’at, Neytiri’s mother and a spiritual leader of the Omatikaya clan. While Mo’at wasn’t a major character in The Way of Water, she’ll be important in Fire and Ash. Neytiri is struggling, and needs the help and guidance of her mother and clan to recover.
