Avatar: Fire and Ash” propels its protagonists into full-blown conflict, a turn of events that aligns with the story’s established trajectory. The film’s trailer was unveiled on Monday, offering glimpses of the intense battles looming for Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). To further clarify, Worthington shared insights about his character’s predicament in an interview with Empire. Initially, Jake Sully was a soldier in the first movie, and his journey aimed at abandoning war for a new life path. In “Fire and Ash,” set to hit theaters on December 19th, he is compelled to revert to his old ways, not only due to external threats but also by the weight of his personal sorrow.
In the final scenes of “Avatar: The Way of Water”, there was a sense of sadness and suspense, as if hanging on a precipice emotionally speaking. The eldest son of Jake and Neytiri, named Neteyam (played by Jamie Flatters), met his untimely end during the climactic conflict. Director James Cameron revealed to Empire that the grief over Neteyam’s death forms the emotional base for this new story. “In this movie,” he explained, “every character is responding from a place of trauma. Jake is grappling with the loss of his son, while Lo’ak is dealing with the death of his brother and his own guilt surrounding those events.
In a shift from his peacemaking role in the past, Jake is currently grappling with grief, as pointed out by Worthington. This uncertainty about the future has led him to revert to a familiar environment – military service. For Jake, engaging in combat and warfare offers a sense of comfort and security.
According to Worthington, the death of Neteyam has created a rift in the bond between Jake and Neytiri. He finds it skillfully executed. In other words, due to the tragic event, there’s now a divide in their relationship. This clever move by Jim is how he separates the ideal love story. Both Jake and Neytiri bear this shared pain, but they struggle to help each other heal. As a result, they drift apart, not out of choice, but due to their need to cope individually. Jake returns to fighting, while Neytiri becomes more distant.
In the trailer, we catch a glimpse of the intense conflict brewing between Jake and Neytiri. At one point, Jake angrily reprimands her, hinting that living in hate isn’t sustainable for her. This dynamic shift in their relationship is intriguing, and it appears that Neytiri harbors unspoken anger as well. Following her threat to eliminate Spider at the end of the last film, she is back in action again, and it seems she confronts the new Na’vi adversary, Varang (played by Oona Chaplin), directly.
The film titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash” will be released in theaters on December 19th. You can currently stream its two preceding films on Disney+.
