The Last Airbender” recently unveiled exciting news about its upcoming small-screen continuation titled “Avatar: Seven Havens“. Shortly after this announcement, the creators of the franchise dropped a bombshell, confirming that actor Steven Yeun will portray Prince Zuko in the first movie of the series, “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender”, scheduled for release next year. However, some fans are divided over whether recasting is the right move for the series.
This year at San Diego Comic-Con, creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko revealed that the actor voicing Fire Nation’s prince in the upcoming film for “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender” will not be the original voice actor. Instead, Steven Yeun from “The Walking Dead” will be stepping into the role of the adult Zuko, previously portrayed by Dante Basco. This casting news has caused a stir among Avatar fans on social media, as they discuss and express their different opinions about this significant change in the cherished universe.

Steven Yuen demonstrates exceptional voice acting skills not only in Invincible, but also series such as Tuca and Bertie, Final Space, and more. Watching him bring Zuko to life is truly captivating!

I think Steven Yuen is a great actor, but I’m not sure if I can accept any actor besides Dante Basco as the voice of Zuko (with the exception of when Zuko is a child or an elderly character).

1. “Steven Yeun is among my most admired actors, and I truly appreciate his talent.”
2. “Although I have reservations about Steven Yeun as an adult Zuko, I am eager to witness what he’s capable of in future roles.”— Beady (@beadydesert3) July 29, 2025
I’m fond of Steven both as an actor, a voice artist, and personally. However, I strongly believe recasting Zuko would be wrong. Secretly, I hope they’ll let Avatar: The Last Airbender remain untouched.

Yuen Returns To Bending
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel a thrill running through me when I think about Steven Yeun stepping into the role of Zuko in the upcoming project. But here’s an interesting tidbit: this isn’t his first foray into the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. In fact, if you recall, he played Avatar Wan in the spin-off series, The Legend of Korra. This wasn’t just any character; Avatar Wan was the very first Avatar, setting the universe on its course. A flashback sequence in the story struck a chord with fans and even co-creator Bryan Konietzko couldn’t hide his joy when he said: “Steven Yeun was Avatar Wan. He played the first Avatar in The Legend of Korra. We loved working with him and we’re excited to have him back in our universe.
Originally scheduled for release in cinemas this year, “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender” was later moved to January 2026 due to unforeseen circumstances. However, another delay has been announced, pushing the premiere to the autumn of next year. Fans are keeping their fingers crossed that the film will stick to this schedule. Apart from Steven Yeun as Zuko, the film’s cast includes Eric Nam as Aang, Jessica Matten as Katara, Roman Zaragoza as Sokka, Dionne Quan as Toph, and Dave Bautista in an unspecified role. With his addition to the cast, Bautista brings a significant amount of star power to the project.
