As a huge MCU fan, I still get emotional thinking about Iron Man’s death in Avengers: Endgame. It was such a powerful moment – sacrificing himself to defeat Thanos by using the Infinity Stones. He knew it would kill him, but he did it anyway, just getting a few last moments to connect with Pepper and the others. But what really struck me is that, as T’Challa pointed out, death isn’t necessarily the end in the MCU. Tony’s legacy lives on through characters like Peter Parker, who’s clearly inspired by everything Tony taught him, and brilliant minds like Riri Williams, who are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, just like he did.
The MCU is planning to honor its most iconic character in a surprising way: by featuring Robert Downey Jr. as the new villain, Doctor Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday. This casting choice is likely intentional, and the film will explore why Doom is suddenly focused on conquering the MCU. His arrival will be a major challenge for the Avengers, and his motivations may even be connected to Tony Stark’s legacy.
Tony Stark Doesn’t Want to Mess With Time in Avengers: Endgame

In Avengers: Infinity War, Iron Man, Captain America, and the other heroes are devastated as many of their friends disappear. After processing the shock and arguing amongst themselves, they refocus and try to find Thanos. They manage to surprise him, but he’s weakened from using the Infinity Stones twice to destroy them. The Avengers are stunned, and after finally defeating Thanos, they each go their separate ways to cope with the end of the battle. Five years later, a glimmer of hope appears when Scott Lang shares the secrets of the Quantum Realm with Captain America and Black Widow.
The group, convinced they’ve found a way to save the world, contacts Tony Stark for help. He quickly dashes their hopes, explaining that time travel through the Quantum Realm isn’t possible. But despite telling them it can’t be done, he secretly starts working on a solution anyway, offering a small chance of success. Soon after, the team travels to different moments in time and gathers the Infinity Stones. Smart Hulk then uses them to bring everyone back. However, their relief is short-lived as a version of Thanos attacks. Tony acknowledges the danger, stating that tampering with time always has consequences. He’s right, and his warning hints at potential problems to come in Doomsday.
Doctor Doom Could Be a Result of Tony’s Actions

Doctor Doom is set to be a major villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but very little is known about him. Some fans believe he comes from Earth-828, based on a brief scene after the credits of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, this is just a guess, as his focus on the multiverse suggests he could be from anywhere. Another theory is that Doctor Doom’s creation is a consequence of the Avengers’ time travel in Endgame – their actions might have altered timelines and inadvertently created this villain, who appears to be fueled by revenge against Iron Man.
This theory makes sense, especially with rumors that Doctor Doom will target the original Captain America after the events of Doomsday. With Iron Man gone, Steve Rogers is the only major character who altered the timeline and could be a target. It’s also possible Doom will fault the Time Variance Authority for not preventing things, which would explain Loki’s involvement. While the specifics of Doomsday’s story are still unclear, there’s plenty of evidence suggesting it will be a crucial event, just as important to the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga as any other Marvel project.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
