Avengers: Doomsday Early Release Chances Get Exciting Update

There are reports that Marvel Studios might release Avengers: Doomsday earlier than planned, potentially disrupting expectations for a strong opening weekend for Dune: Part Three. Both films, Dune: Part Three from Warner Bros. and Avengers: Doomsday, are currently scheduled to come out on December 18th.

The final film in the Dune series is causing some issues for Avengers 5. Warner Bros. has a deal that gives Dune three weeks of exclusive access to IMAX theaters, meaning Marvel won’t be able to show its film in that premium format until mid-January. As these big movies compete for audiences this holiday season, Jumanji 3 has also entered the fray, moving its release date to December 25th to take advantage of the Christmas holiday weekend.

YouTuber John Campea reports that a source working with movie theaters has told him there’s been talk of moving up the release date of Avengers: Doomsday to December 11th, the date recently vacated by Jumanji 3. However, these conversations are still very preliminary and nothing is confirmed.

Delaying the release of Doomsday by one week would give it a week to shine before competing with Dune 3. However, this would likely kill any chance of recreating the “Dunesday” buzz – the successful pairing of Barbie and Oppenheimer which drove huge box office numbers when they were released on the same day in 2023.

Delaying the release of Doomsday would allow Marvel Studios to fully utilize IMAX screens for a week before Dune 3 comes out, maximizing potential revenue.

As a big Marvel fan, I was really relieved to hear Disney say they’re still planning to release Avengers 5 in December, even with Dune 3 coming out around the same time. That news came out before Jumanji 3 was delayed, though, so things might have changed a little since then. I’m hoping they stick to the plan!

Why Avengers: Doomsday Needs to Change Release Date

An announcement about an earlier release date for Avengers: Doomsday could come soon if Disney and Marvel Studios decide to move up the film’s launch. Disney will likely highlight the movie during its presentation at CinemaCon on April 14th, and that event could be where they officially confirm the new date.

The latest Jumanji movie is from Sony Pictures, and there’s talk that it could be connected to the upcoming Avengers 5. This is because Tobey Maguire, who played Spider-Man, is expected to return in Avengers 5. Some believe Disney asked Sony to move Jumanji 3‘s release date so that another movie, Doomsday, could have a one-week run in IMAX theaters.

While some fans might be disappointed, postponing or canceling a potential “Dunesday” event is likely the right move. Unlike the successful pairing of Barbie and Oppenheimer, Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three appeal to a very similar audience, and releasing them close together would probably hurt both films at the box office.

Everyone seems to want Avengers 5 to happen, but it’s important to remember that nothing is confirmed yet. Even a reliable source, John Campea, said the discussions are currently very preliminary. Disney could still choose to release Doomsday as planned on December 18th instead, potentially going up against Dune 3.
