While many consider films like *Avengers: Endgame* or even the original *Iron Man* to be the most crucial in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, *Captain America: Civil War* actually holds that title. This movie marks a turning point because it divides the Avengers, with Iron Man wanting government control after past mistakes, and Captain America refusing to compromise his team’s independence. Their conflict escalates, ultimately fracturing the Avengers. This division proves disastrous, as Earth becomes vulnerable to Thanos, who successfully collects all the Infinity Stones and eliminates half of all life in the universe.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s newer heroes are learning from past errors by building strong teams to handle emergencies. But as they prepare for the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday*, they’re getting distracted by small arguments, which could create an opportunity for Doctor Doom to become the next big threat, just like Thanos.
Civil War 2 Is About to Kick Off in the MCU
As a huge fan, I’ve been really invested in Sam Wilson’s journey since Steve Rogers passed him the shield in *Endgame*. It’s been tough for him figuring out what being Captain America *really* means, and he’s worked so hard to feel worthy of the title. By the end of *Captain America: Brave New World*, he finally feels ready to move forward, and he’s excited about the idea of bringing the Avengers back together – he even asks Joaquin Torres to join him! But then Valentina Allegra de Fontaine completely blindsides him by announcing *her* version of the Avengers to the world. Now, Sam’s usually pretty understanding, even willing to work with bad guys if he thinks it’s for the greater good, but something about Valentina’s New Avengers just feels off to him.
In *Thunderbolts*, Bucky Barnes reveals his conversation with Sam Wilson didn’t go well, and Sam is trying to secure the rights to the name “Avengers.” Although Bucky doesn’t say exactly what Sam’s issue is, it’s clear Sam disapproves of a team of ex-criminals being seen as Earth’s heroes, particularly with John Walker, the former Captain America who fell from grace, on board. Sam thinks he could lead the team better and will get a chance to prove it in *Doomsday*. However, focusing on the Avengers will take time away from preparing for the threat of Doom.
Doctor Doom Might Get an Easy Win in Avengers: Doomsday
At the end of the *Thunderbolts* movie, the Fantastic Four unexpectedly arrive on Earth, hinting at a major threat. Victor Von Doom has captured Franklin Richards, and the Fantastic Four likely need help from other heroes to stop him. However, the Avengers teams won’t recognize Doom as a danger, allowing internal conflicts to continue while a new character, played by Robert Downey Jr., takes action. By the time Doom reveals his true plan, it may be too late, and he’s likely to succeed without facing any defeats.
Following the events of *Doomsday*, *Avengers: Secret Wars* will happen immediately, and with no other major villain appearing, Doctor Doom will get another chance to be the primary threat. He’ll probably learn from Thanos’s mistakes and try to avoid the same downfall. The Avengers might be focused on their internal conflict over who deserves the name, believing it’s crucial for public trust and freedom, but this disagreement will likely hinder them when the true battle begins.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
