Avengers: Doomsday Is Officially Fixing One of the Biggest MCU Multiverse Saga Problems

Marvel’s current Multiverse Saga hasn’t been as smooth as hoped. The studio has struggled to build on the success of the Infinity Saga, especially with key actors like Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. moving on. Before, the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed unstoppable – even when a movie wasn’t perfect, the overall franchise was strong, consistently earning high box office numbers and generally positive reviews. A big part of that feeling came from the belief that Marvel boss Kevin Feige had a clear, long-term plan for everything.

The Infinity Saga was so captivating because of how all the stories connected, the hidden details, and the way the plot steadily built. While it wasn’t perfectly planned from the start – changes were made to Thanos’s story, Spider-Man was added, and the Inhumans movie was scrapped – it felt like a unified whole, consistently building towards a satisfying conclusion. The current Multiverse Saga, however, feels disjointed, unfocused, and varies greatly in quality. Plus, Marvel has had to significantly change its villain plans due to circumstances beyond their control.

This brings us to Avengers: Doomsday, which feels like a deliberate shift in direction for the series. It’s clear from the return of Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. – Evans as Steve Rogers in some capacity, and Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom – that this film and its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, will center around Doom as the main villain, pulled from somewhere within the multiverse.

The movie represents a shift in direction, evident in its embrace of classic X-Men characters. More importantly, it feels like things are finally moving forward, bringing back heroes who haven’t been seen since the events of Endgame and creating a sense of excitement that’s been lacking.

Avengers: Doomsday Can Finally Give The MCU’s New Heroes A Bigger Role

After the big Infinity Saga, Marvel kept making sequels, but they also brought in some exciting new characters, such as Shang-Chi, played by Simu Liu, and Ms. Marvel, played by Iman Vellani. However, we haven’t had much time to get to know them. Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova is a notable exception and will likely play a major role in the upcoming Doomsday project. Overall, audiences haven’t had the same chance to connect with these new heroes as they did with the original Avengers team.

I’m really excited about Doomsday because it looks like they’re finally bringing some of our favorite heroes back together! We’re going to see Simu Liu as Shang-Chi again, which is awesome since we last saw him in The Legend of the Ten Rings back in 2021, and it sounds like he’ll be joining Sam Wilson’s new Avengers team. Plus, the whole Fantastic Four – all four of them! – will be back after their first appearance last year, and they’ll probably have a big part to play. It’s also great that we’ll see characters like Thor’s daughter, Love, Namor from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Sentry from Thunderbolts getting another chance to shine in the MCU.

Keeping track of all the characters is a challenge, but the Russo brothers handled a large cast well in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. While some characters might not have major roles, this is a good sign, particularly if they show up in both of the next Avengers films.

Even a few standout scenes for these characters could attract a much wider audience, and potentially build excitement for the next phase of Marvel movies. While it’s great to see familiar faces in Doomsday, the future of the franchise depends on developing its new characters, and this could be a significant step in that direction – more so than we’ve seen throughout the Multiverse Saga so far.

We still need to see more of some characters introduced in Phases 4 through 6. It would be great to revisit Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, and Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez definitely fits into a story involving the multiverse. However, some of these appearances will likely have to be delayed.

Some characters likely won’t return unless Marvel has a very long-term plan for them, like with the Eternals or Harry Styles’ role. While it’s unlikely to reach the heights of the Infinity Saga, this could still build a solid base for future MCU phases, introducing heroes who can drive the story forward instead of constantly referencing the past.

The next two Avengers movies are scheduled for release in December: Avengers: Doomsday will be in theaters on December 18th, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on December 17th, 2027.
