With the release of Avengers: Doomsday getting closer, fans are buzzing with speculation after the trailers dropped. During production, rumors about the plot have spread just as quickly as the theories. But with so much information – and misinformation – out there, it’s become nearly impossible to know what’s real. We’re not even going to attempt to sort through it all.
We’ve gathered a lot of potential plot details for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and are ranking them based on how likely we think they are to be true. Important Note: None of this information is confirmed! It’s all just our educated guesses and speculation, so don’t take it as fact.
We’ve ranked the potential plot points for Avengers: Doomsday from most likely to least likely. We’ve categorized them based on how believable they are, ranging from ‘almost guaranteed’ to ‘highly improbable’.
It’s All Steve’s Fault

The initial trailer for Avengers: Doomsday showed that Chris Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers, now living in the 1950s with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and their baby. Rumors indicate Rogers accidentally caused the collapse of the multiverse by altering the timeline with the Infinity Stones – instead of creating a new branch, he changed the main timeline. This act will motivate Doctor Doom to search the multiverse for the cause of the chaos, ultimately putting Captain America and his son in danger.
Think it’s possible? Absolutely. The recent teaser featuring Steve Rogers wasn’t random – it hints at a crucial story element. The ending of Avengers: Endgame has always left a significant gap in the storyline, and it seems the creators are now addressing it, likely with this new development.
A v X is Happening

The Avengers vs. X-Men event is widely considered a major disappointment for Marvel. What should have been a straightforward conflict between the two teams and their beliefs became overly complicated and crammed with obscure references from both X-Men, Avengers, and broader Marvel storylines, making it difficult for many readers to follow. There are reports that Avengers: Doomsday will draw inspiration from AvX, aiming for a similarly large scale, but with a story that’s easier for fans to understand.
Details about the upcoming story have emerged, revealing a complex conflict orchestrated by Doctor Doom. He’s deceiving the X-Men from the Fox universe into believing they need to fight to protect their world against the MCU’s heroes – the Avengers, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and Wakandans. At the same time, Doom, disguised as Tony Stark, convinces the MCU heroes that the X-Men are the aggressors, leading them to take Monica Rambeau hostage (as seen in the post-credits scene of The Marvels). This deception will ultimately cause the MCU heroes to travel to the X-Men’s universe (Earth-10005) for a major showdown.
Absolutely, it’s happening. When Marvel Studios announced the cast for Avengers: Doomsday, many of the original X-Men movie actors were included, signaling their return wasn’t a coincidence. Fans are eagerly anticipating this major crossover event between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the X-Men film series that started it all.
Doom’s Origin

According to leaked plot details, Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes from the 31st century. He was a king who ruled Latveria with his wife, Sue Von Doom, and their children, Franklin and Valeria. His entire universe was destroyed by incursions caused by timeline issues created by Steve Rogers. Now the only one left, Doom is searching for a way to fix reality and recover what he’s lost. He believes he’s the only one with the strength to control the multiverse and save at least part of it.
It’s almost guaranteed. The current idea for Doom’s backstory feels like a direct copy of Kang the Conqueror’s story. Fans have been predicting this since the movie Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was retitled Avengers: Doomsday, and some leaked artwork showing Doom and his family seems to confirm it.
Scarlet Witch Will Return

According to recent reports, Doctor Doom will be on a mission across the main Marvel universe (Earth-616) to collect individuals who can warp reality. This started when he connected with Franklin Richards from another universe (Earth-828) during the events of Fantastic Four: First Steps. It’s believed that Doom will travel to Wundagore Mountain and use Franklin’s powers to bring back Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch. Wanda will reportedly be the first of many powerful people Doom recruits to help him build a new world tailored to his and his followers’ desires. For Wanda, this new world would allow her to be reunited with her children.
It’s extremely likely Scarlet Witch will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios and Elizabeth Olsen have hinted at this for years, suggesting the character deserves a better storyline after her portrayal in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. A story where Wanda seeks to create her own world, following her struggles in the main Marvel timeline, would be very interesting, and her involvement feels essential to wrapping up the current “Multiverse Saga”.
The 616 Alliance

A somewhat unclear part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie is figuring out how the current group of Marvel heroes will team up again to save the world, considering they haven’t fought together as a team since Avengers: Endgame.
Rumors suggest a disagreement is brewing between Sam Wilson’s (Captain America’s) team of Avengers and Bucky Barnes’ new Thunderbolts team. Shuri and the Fantastic Four will find themselves caught in the middle of this conflict. The core of the problem is Monica Rambeau, who’s been found on another Earth (Earth-10005) with the X-Men. Sam and Carol Danvers want to launch a rescue mission across dimensions, but Bucky and others believe their priority should be defending their own world. Adding to the chaos, Doctor Doom will arrive with the Fantastic Four, and he’ll use his similarity to Tony Stark to trick the heroes into fighting the X-Men, effectively dividing the MCU heroes into two opposing sides.
How likely is this to happen? It’s reasonably possible, but the specifics are key. The general idea – universes 616 and 10005 colliding – seems plausible, though the details in the leaks might not be exactly how it plays out. We don’t have much information about important characters like Thor, Doctor Doom, the people of Wakanda, Namor, or the Fantastic Four, and the movie will need to tie up a lot of loose ends from after Endgame just to explain how Earth-616 gets involved.
The TVA Gets Annihilated (& Its Avengers)

A major plot twist revealed in leaks for Avengers: Doomsday involves Doctor Doom destroying the Time Variance Authority (TVA). This happens when Doom forces Earth 616 and Earth 10005 to fight each other. He then steals Cerebro from Earth-10005, using it to track Loki across the multiverse. By following Loki’s path through the TVA and his link to the end of time, Doom is able to locate and attack the organization that polices the multiverse.
Loki is off on another adventure, having pulled Steve Rogers back into action to fix the multiverse – which he accidentally damaged. With Loki unavailable, no one can stand against Doom except a new team of heroes assembled by the agency. This team, dubbed the Multiversal Avengers, includes Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), Gambit (Channing Tatum), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), and X-23 (Dafne Keen) from the Deadpool & Wolverine universe; the Spider-Men played by Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire; Mister Fantastic as portrayed by Ioan Gruffudd from the Fox films; and Professor X and Magneto (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) from X-Men: First Class. Even with their combined strength, the Multiversal Avengers are ultimately defeated.
It’s very likely – if not completely true – that we’ll see Doctor Doom facing off against the TVA. This makes sense because defeating the TVA is a key step for Doom if he wants to rule the entire multiverse. The idea of a ‘Multiversal Avengers’ team, already established in the comics, would fit perfectly and would explain a lot of what we saw in Deadpool & Wolverine, like the puzzling scene of Thor cradling a wounded Deadpool while crying.
Spider-Man: No More Home

All the Avengers films start with a grim opening scene or action sequence before the movie’s title appears. Recent reports suggest Avengers: Doomsday will follow this pattern, beginning with the destruction of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man universe due to an incursion. Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man will fight to prevent it, but ultimately fail. Just before everything is lost, Peter Parker will be transported through a portal, becoming the only person to escape his world.
How likely is all of this? It’s about as probable as the storyline involving the TVA. There’s a clear connection, since Maguire’s Spider-Man eventually joins a team of Multiversal Avengers. This hints that Deadpool and Wolverine will be the ones to assemble the team. The big question now is whether we’ll see a longer introduction, perhaps showing other universes or characters being destroyed, before the main conflict begins – similar to what happened with Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man.
Loki & Thor Fight As Brothers (And One Dies)

Okay, so from what I’ve heard about the ending of Avengers: Doomsday, it’s going to be epic! Apparently, the big showdown happens at the very end of time, right at Loki’s throne near the Tree of Life, Yggdrasil. And get this – Doom actually kills Thor, with Loki watching! It’s a total flip from what happened in Infinity War. Then, Doom takes over everything, claiming the throne and basically remaking the entire multiverse into his own world, which he’s calling ‘Battleworld’. I’m still reeling from just hearing about it!
How likely is Thor’s death? It’s possible, but probably not permanent. A major character needs to die in the upcoming ‘Doomsday’ saga to raise the stakes, and Thor, having been a central figure for so long, would be a logical choice. However, the ‘Secret Wars’ comic features a storyline where Doctor Doom uses multiple versions of Thor as enforcers. Many fans anticipate this ‘Thor Corps’ will appear in the movie Avengers: Secret Wars, suggesting that while one Thor might seemingly die, we could end up seeing many more.
Doctor Strange Switches Sides

Recent leaks suggest a major twist in the upcoming ‘Battle of Yggdrasill’ storyline: Doctor Strange will seemingly turn against the other heroes and join forces with Doom. The leaks claim Strange will enter the fight after Thor’s apparent death, and will then be convinced by Doom’s arguments and the threat of total destruction to join his side. With Strange’s assistance, Doom is expected to gain control of the multiverse and establish Battleworld.
How likely is this to happen? It’s very possible, but also quite dangerous for the story. The ‘Secret Wars’ comic book event from the 2010s featured Doctor Doom ruling everything, with Stephen Strange as his right-hand man – a morally complex role for Strange. While Benedict Cumberbatch could deliver a great performance with that nuance, general audiences might see it as simply repeating the ending of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ by having Strange seemingly support the villain’s win.
Omega-Level Fight

Leaked details reveal that the climax of Avengers: Doomsday, called the Battle of Yggdrasill, is a massive team-up. Members of the Avengers, New Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four all fight together, featuring a reunion between Thor and Loki, and a chance for Steve Rogers to rally the heroes. The combined teams face off against Doctor Doom and his allies, Wanda Maximoff and Magneto (played by Ian McKellen). Key moments reportedly include a battle between Sentry and Doom (where Sentry is defeated), Doom killing Professor X in a psychic showdown after absorbing the Void, Wanda killing Jean Grey (who then passes the Phoenix Force to Wolverine), and Steve Rogers losing a fight with Doom using Thor’s axe, leading to Thor’s death and Doctor Strange turning against the team.
It’s very likely we’ll see a huge final battle at Yggdrasil, based on what happened in the Loki series. However, some details about how the battle might happen – like Steve Rogers using Stormbreaker, the appearance of Sentry/Void, and certain X-Men elements (such as Wolverine with the Phoenix Force) – seem uncertain and could change.
Villain Cabal Cameo (828 Strikes Back)

As the battle on Yggdrasil rages, the heroes remaining on Earth-616 will face a major threat. A team of villains from another Earth (Earth-828) is coming to eliminate rivals – and specifically, Doctor Doom. This dangerous group includes twisted versions of familiar heroes: Superior Iron Man, Captain Hydra, and Maestro Hulk, along with a powerful version of Thanos known as “King” Thanos. The conflict will take place right here on Earth-616.
Is this likely to happen? It’s doubtful. If rumors suggested Doom was bringing the Cabal into the Battle of Yggdrasil, that would fit the story better. As it stands, it’s unclear why this villain group attacking Earth and its remaining heroes would matter much. It also makes you wonder how significant the main Earth-616 storyline will be when other major events, like the conflict between Avengers and X-Men and the TVA attack, are also happening. The Cabal appearing would be a fun nod to fans, but they’d need a bigger role in Secret Wars to feel truly important. Ultimately, whether this works depends on who plays the Cabal – will they use the original actors, or recast with big names?
(Medieval) Battleworld

Rumors suggest that the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will conclude with Doctor Doom winning. He’ll supposedly use the shattered remains of the multiverse to create his ideal world, called Battleworld. According to these leaks, the few heroes who survive will find themselves in a world resembling Medieval Times, with a completely rewritten history and new identities.
It’s a toss-up, but here’s what’s likely to happen: Avengers: Infinity War left us with Thanos winning and the heroes’ fate uncertain. Similarly, Avengers: Doomsday will probably end with a quick look at the world Doctor Doom has created, or at least show him in power. Given how much story is packed into these movies, it’s unlikely we’ll get a detailed view of the new reality before Secret Wars. It makes more sense for the second movie to completely re-establish the Marvel Cinematic Universe, shaped by Doom’s vision.
Immortus Doom

A major surprise from leaks about Avengers: Doomsday is that Doctor Doom figured out the multiverse a long time ago. He actually created the Sacred Timeline after fighting a war against different versions of himself, using a powerful being called Alioth as a weapon. While this Doom is trying to rule all realities, his alternate selves have united as a Council of Dooms to oppose him. This means Doom, not the Council of Kangs, was the original master of the multiverse, and the TVA was unaware of the true history behind the Sacred Timeline.
How likely is this scenario? It’s very uncertain. This plotline feels like a straightforward replacement for the established connection between Kang the Conqueror, He Who Remains (from the Loki Season 1 finale), and the Council of Kangs. However, Avengers: Doomsday could easily – and perhaps inevitably – show Doctor Doom defeating the Council of Kangs, removing them as rivals for control of the multiverse. Completely changing the existing storyline involving He Who Remains, Kang, and Victor Timely, after the MCU has already invested in it, doesn’t seem very plausible. It would be simpler to portray Doom as content in his own world, only to be drawn into the multiversal conflict and motivated to restore order to the chaos. That’s a relatable villain arc, and it would give Robert Downey Jr. plenty of opportunity to deliver a compelling performance.
Tony Stark’s Retcon Origin (Always Doom)

Another major reveal from the Doomsday leaks is that Victor Von Doom isn’t a villainous version of Tony Stark. Instead, Tony Stark is actually a different version of Doom. Apparently, Doom saw what happened when his alternate self was adopted by Howard and Maria Stark. Intrigued by this heroic path his counterpart took, Doom allowed the Avengers‘ universe to thrive, but grew to resent them even more when they ultimately destroyed his own world.
The chances of this happening seem slim. Previous leaks suggest Doctor Doom will disguise himself as Tony Stark using his own technology and research, tricking Earth’s heroes into believing he’s a variant of Tony. This explanation is less complicated than the idea of Tony being adopted and fits better with the manipulative character described in the leaks. The main reason for connecting Tony and Doom might be to hint that the MCU hasn’t shown us the true Iron Man yet, paving the way for the role to be recast while allowing Robert Downey Jr. to play Doctor Doom. It would completely change how we view Avengers: Age of Ultron.
