Avengers: Doomsday Rumor Details “Dysfunction” on Set, Reason for Reshoots

It seems that the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday” might be facing challenges before its completion. Despite delays and reports from the production set in the UK suggesting turbulence, hosts John Rocha and Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic Podcast discussed potential reasons for the alleged tension on the set, as well as claims that the film requires three weeks of reshoots due to changing filming strategies. Interestingly, it’s rumored that a particular actor with an extensive history in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be at the heart of these issues.

Sneider shared with Rocha that the disorganization he’s encountered on this set is comparable to that of the Fast and Furious films. He explained that there’s an abundance of machismo and egos among those working there, with many believing they know the best course of action. Ultimately, it’s only Robert Downey Jr.’s approach that truly matters.

Sneider clarified that the rumored reason behind the reshoots of “Doomsday” involved filming Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Doctor Doom. It’s said in gossip circles that Downey wasn’t actually seen on-screen during these scenes. Instead, a stand-in actor portrayed his face, and another doubled for him in the famous Doctor Doom suit while Downey delivered his lines off-camera.

Approximately three weeks into filming, Downey reportedly expressed his dissatisfaction by saying, “This isn’t right, I want to re-film all scenes where I’m wearing the suit.” According to Sneider, this was the information he received.

It’s not hard to see why some people might believe that rumor is true. After all, a large part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) success can be attributed to Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark. His debut as Iron Man in the 2008 film “Iron Man” not only kick-started the cinematic universe, but Stark remained a key figure and central character throughout the MCU’s screen presence for over a decade. It seems logical, then, that Downey would hold significant influence within Marvel Studios.

However, it’s worth noting that following Downey’s reported eight-figure payday for his role as Doctor Doom, questions have been raised about whether such substantial salaries are being used effectively. Journalist Umberto Gonzalez (Sneider) posed the question, “Why are we paying so much money to talent and not making full use of their talents?” This suggests a potential issue with the allocation of resources within Marvel Studios.

A “Sinking Ship” May Be to Blame for Doomsday’s Dysfunction

Sneider further elaborated on his ideas regarding the origin of the Doomsday group’s dysfunction. In essence, he suggested that it’s largely due to inflated egos. The situation clearly demonstrates too many individuals with a sense of ownership over the group, much like too many chefs in a kitchen, and an underlying feeling that the ship is about to sink, prompting them to secure their own interests before disaster strikes.

It appears that Sneider is hinting at the underwhelming performances of Marvel’s recent cinematic releases, specifically “Thunderbolts” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Previously, a Marvel film was nearly assured to be a massive box office success, but “Thunderbolts” earned only $382 million, and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” experienced a significant decline in ticket sales during its second weekend and hasn’t managed to surpass the $500-million mark globally yet.

Sneider noted his concern about the disorganized environment on this particular set. He mentioned that such dysfunction isn’t typically observed on other movie sets, especially big productions. However, it seems everyone has their own methods and preferences now, and there appears to be less flexibility than in the past.
