Despite a strong year for movies in 2026, nothing is generating as much excitement as Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday. This is the first Avengers film since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, and it boasts the largest cast of any superhero movie ever made. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time playing Doctor Doom. Doomsday is the first part of a two-part finale to the Multiverse Saga, which will conclude with Avengers: Secret Wars a year later.
Originally planned for May 2025, then pushed to May 2026, Marvel has now moved the release date of Doomsday to December 18th, aiming for the busy holiday season. This will be only the second Marvel Cinematic Universe film released in December, following the huge success of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which earned over $1.9 billion globally and became the highest-grossing solo superhero movie ever. However, Marvel may still adjust the date further as the holiday release schedule becomes clearer.
Marvel might release Avengers: Doomsday a week earlier, potentially on December 11th instead of the 18th. This possible change follows Sony’s decision to move Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s new Jumanji movie from December 11th to December 25th.
If the release date changes, Doomsday would be the only big movie opening in theaters that weekend. Right now, it’s scheduled to come out on December 18th, the same day as Dune: Part Three, which fans have playfully dubbed “Dunesday.” Moving the date would likely help Doomsday make more money, as it would get a full week to show on IMAX screens worldwide. Currently, Dune 3 has exclusive access to those screens starting December 18th, meaning Doomsday would be blocked from showing there if the release date remains the same.
Considering the overall strategy, it’s a smart move for Marvel Studios to move the release of Doomsday to December 11th. This keeps the film near the important holiday season and gives it a week to dominate theaters – including IMAX – before Dune 3 and Jumanji 4 are released.
Currently, Marvel Studios hasn’t announced any changes to the release date of the film, and even the earliest possible date is still more than eight months away. Despite this, excitement for the movie is growing rapidly, and it has the potential to be one of the biggest movie events in recent years.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently set to debut in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
