The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday finally explains something that was left unanswered in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While Shuri became the new Black Panther, she didn’t want to be queen as well. This isn’t the first time in Marvel comics that the Black Panther and the ruler of Wakanda have been different people, but it’s a first for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Okay, so the big question after Wakanda Forever is: who’s the new Black Panther? It really seemed like they were hinting it was M’Baku, Winston Duke’s character, who originally challenged T’Challa! Honestly, I’m so excited about that possibility. M’Baku is a fan favorite, and it would be awesome to see him take on a bigger role. Plus, he’d bring a totally different vibe – his way of thinking is so different from both T’Challa and Shuri, which would be really interesting to watch.
We Now Know M’Baku is King of Wakanda

The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday takes place in Wakanda and marks the return of Shuri. Through her narration, we learn M’Baku is now king and seems to be preparing Wakanda for a devastating fate. This reinforces how massive Doomsday will be, especially after the previous trailer for the X-Men portion of the story hinted at similar destruction for the mutant world. Wakanda’s situation echoes a comic book storyline that led to the 2015 Secret Wars event, where Black Panther was the first to discover the entire multiverse was in danger.
As a film fan, I’ve noticed some really interesting changes in Wakanda since M’Baku took over. Shuri’s Black Panther suit is noticeably different – the new colors hint that they’ve been working with Atlantis and incorporating their tech into the design. It’s cool to see the relationship between Wakanda and Atlantis has really blossomed, and it seems like both countries are gaining from it. Honestly, it’s a bit surprising considering M’Baku always seemed more inclined to keep to himself than T’Challa was. But when you think about it, both Wakanda and Atlantis have always been pretty independent, so maybe it makes sense they’d find common ground.
It’s worth wondering if Wakanda, now led by M’Baku, will keep sharing its advanced technology with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The arrival of the Fantastic Four in Wakanda is ironic, as they’ll probably assume the rest of the world is as technologically advanced. However, Wakanda is likely the most advanced nation in the MCU, making it unique. Now, with so much at stake, the big question is how M’Baku will lead Wakanda moving forward.
