Avengers: Doomsday’s X-Men Characters Explained: What Universe Are They From

Marvel Studios has just dropped its third trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, and it’s the first time we’re seeing some of the X-Men who will be in the new MCU movie. It’s still unclear exactly which version of the Marvel universe these mutant heroes come from.

The main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline happens on Earth-616, but the Fantastic Four will be coming from Earth-828. The situation with the X-Men is more complicated. Even though the X-Men characters appearing in Avengers: Doomsday will be played by the same actors who played them in the previous Fox films, it’s not entirely clear where they fit into the broader MCU timeline.

Are Avengers: Doomsday’s X-Men From The Original Fox Universe? (Unlikely)

The X-Men movies from 20th Century Fox are famous for their complicated and often confusing timeline. But let’s break down the essential details to show why the Fox universe, specifically Earth-10005, likely isn’t the timeline that Doomsday’s X-Men come from.

The original X-Men movies from the early 2000s showed Cyclops dying in The Last Stand (2006). But the timeline was changed in Days of Future Past (2014). This prevented a future where robots called Sentinels almost destroyed all mutants, and as a result, Cyclops – and Jean Grey – survived.

The movie Logan (released in 2017) revealed that all the X-Men, except for Wolverine, died when Charles Xavier began experiencing severe seizures that caused him to lose control of his abilities.

Although it’s possible the events of Avengers: Doomsday happen before those in Logan, it doesn’t seem very likely. Both movies are set around the same time – 2028 or 2029 – according to their timelines. Are you following along?

Deadpool’s time-travel antics in Deadpool 2 (2018) and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) add even more complications to the story. Also, the version of Wolverine that Deadpool brought to Earth-10005 doesn’t quite fit, since we know the rest of the X-Men were already dead in that reality.

It appears there are only one or two likely universes where these well-known X-Men originate from, before they team up with the Avengers and Fantastic Four to fight Doctor Doom later this year.

The MCU Has Already Teased This New X-Men Universe

The post-credits scene of The Marvels revealed Monica Rambeau transported to a different reality, separate from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-616), after she closed the cosmic rift at the end of the last MCU film in 2023.

Monica found herself unexpectedly transported to the X-Men’s headquarters, the Xavier Mansion, and was being observed by Beast (played by Kelsey Grammer, who is also appearing in the movie Doomsday). She also met a version of her mother, Maria Rambeau, who in this reality seems to be the superhero Binary.

As a huge X-Men fan, I’ve been really paying attention to how Beast looks in the new movies – he’s much closer to the comics now, which is awesome! Considering that, and everything else I’ve seen, it’s starting to feel really solid that this is the universe all of Doomsday’s X-Men will eventually join when they officially cross over into the MCU. It’s exciting to think it’s all connected!

Cyclops’ classic blue and yellow costume, along with the appearance of Sentinels during his powerful optic blast, strongly hints that this story will take place across multiple universes, not just within the existing Earth-10005 timeline.

Alternatively, the future of the MCU could be something completely different – a fresh start. Marvel Studios might bring back actors from the old Fox Marvel films to create a sense of familiarity and nostalgia. Recent projects like The Marvels haven’t performed as well as previous MCU films, and Phases 4 and 5 haven’t been praised for how well they connect to each other.

It will be really interesting to see how the new X-Men characters are used in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, and whether the Wolverine we saw in 2024 will meet or reconnect with characters from the past.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to release in theaters on December 18th from Marvel Studios.
