Avengers: Doomsday’s X-Men Trailer Might Have Introduced the MCU’s Strongest Character (& You Totally Missed It)

The initial trailers for Avengers: Doomsday are surprisingly emotional. The first shows Steve Rogers, back from a motorcycle ride, immediately stepping into a parental role and picking up his child. The second trailer focuses on Thor, who asks Odin for strength not just to win his next fight, but to return home to his daughter, Love. The third trailer takes a different approach, highlighting the idea of sacrificing personal needs for the greater good.

The latest preview for the 2026 film shows a short, peaceful scene between Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. However, the mood quickly changes with a warning from Magneto about an impending threat. They won’t be facing this danger alone, as a group of courageous mutants stand by their side, even though the odds are stacked against them. While the preview doesn’t reveal all the mutants—some are being saved as surprises for the film’s release—it hints at the possible appearance of Marvel’s most powerful character.

There May Be More Than One of Avengers: Doomsday‘s Mutants Than Meets the Eye

Marvel’s cinematic universe is slowly introducing mutants, and instead of creating a brand new team, they’re bringing back established characters like Magneto, Professor X, Nightcrawler, Mystique, Gambit, and Beast. While these familiar faces will be part of the action, the first big action shot in the official teaser trailer belongs to Cyclops, who unleashes a powerful optic blast while battling Sentinels. This is exciting for fans, as it potentially rights the wrongs of previous portrayals of the character. This moment could be a significant step for the X-Men’s introduction into the MCU.

In X-Men: The Last Stand, Cyclops goes back to the place where Jean Grey died and releases his frustration with a powerful optic blast. Interestingly, this blast seems less intense than the one shown in the Doomsday trailer. Perhaps Cyclops trained in a different reality, giving him new abilities, or the pain of loss unlocked a hidden potential. Both are plausible explanations, and there’s even a possibility that he could become the most powerful being in the entire multiverse – but a few things would need to happen first.

Cyclops Is Capable of Wielding a Great Power

Mutants generally just want to ensure their survival, and often build a safe haven away from humans. In the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, this place is called Utopia and is governed by a group called the Five. They have power over other mutants because each one possesses a fragment of the Phoenix Force – a tremendously powerful cosmic being previously linked to Jean Grey. Eventually, Cyclops gains complete control of the Phoenix Force and believes he knows what’s best for everyone. This leads to conflict with the Avengers, who retaliate. Ultimately, Cyclops chooses to relinquish the Phoenix Force, recognizing its immense danger. However, since this isn’t the Doomsday story, the outcome could be different.

Because Jean Grey isn’t involved in the Doomsday story, it’s possible she’s already disappeared from Cyclops’ timeline, and her powers are now being used by her ex-partner. This would create a fascinating conflict with Doctor Doom, who combines magic and technology. The Phoenix Force, however, is unlike anything Doom has likely encountered in his travels – and no one in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced it yet. But that won’t last forever, so it makes sense to introduce it in a major event.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
