One of the most important Marvel Cinematic Universe movies is gearing up for filming.
Anthony and Joe Russo recently discussed their upcoming Marvel film, Avengers: Secret Wars, in an interview with Deadline. Following Avengers: Doomsday, Secret Wars will conclude the Multiverse Saga. The directors shared that they are currently in the early stages of planning, working on multiple aspects of the film simultaneously. Filming is scheduled to begin this summer for the large-scale team-up movie.
As a huge fan, I was so excited to hear the Russo brothers talk about Avengers: Doomsday! They said they’re still putting the finishing touches on it, but they expect Marvel to take over in November. Basically, that means other artists will likely come in to help polish it up for a few weeks after that. It’s great to know they’re so dedicated to making it the best it can be, even right up until the deadline!
Regarding directing future Marvel Cinematic Universe movies after 2027, there are currently no official plans. The team has stated that their current storyline is finished, with ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ designed to be a connected two-part story. While future collaborations with Marvel are possible, their focus right now is solely on completing ‘Secret Wars’.
Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Secret Wars after first appearing as the character this summer in Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios has kept the cast for the 2027 film under wraps, but several actors have confirmed they’ll be back for the conclusion of Phase 6.
Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri in Black Panther, recently told ScreenRant that she’s gearing up to film Secret Wars after completing work on Avengers: Doomsday. She described finishing Doomsday as a “very great” experience.
Although the Russo brothers don’t foresee themselves working on future Avengers movies after 2027, they haven’t ruled out returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct a film centered around a different character.
The Russo brothers first gained recognition directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and their success with that film led to them directing Captain America: Civil War. This opened the door for them to direct the massive Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Although Marvel is currently filming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the next Marvel movie in theaters will be Spider-Man: Brand New Day, bringing Tom Holland back as Peter Parker this summer. It’s currently unknown if Spider-Man will appear in either of the upcoming Avengers films.
Disney+ will release the new show VisionQuest in October, bringing back Paul Bettany as the popular character Vision. Bettany has hinted that Vision might also appear in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie, but Marvel Studios hasn’t officially confirmed whether he will be involved.
Avengers: Secret Wars is slated to open in theaters on December 17, 2027.
