Marvel Studios is concluding its Multiverse Saga with two big films: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. These movies promise a massive team-up of heroes against the formidable Doctor Doom. While the scale of these films is exciting, it also presents a huge challenge for directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Recently, there were rumors that Secret Wars might be split into two parts, which worried some fans. However, recent news confirms that this split is not happening.
In his latest newsletter, entertainment industry analyst Jeff Sneider addressed a rumor about Marvel potentially splitting the upcoming Secret Wars movie into two parts. He confirmed that Marvel currently has no plans to do so. While someone may have suggested it internally, Sneider says it’s not being considered due to the logistical challenges of scheduling a massive cast and the high cost of bringing Robert Downey Jr. back. He believes dividing the film would be a bad move, as audiences would likely perceive it as a greedy cash grab.
Splitting Avengers: Secret Wars Into Two Movies Would Be a Bad Decision
It’s easy to see why Marvel considered dividing Secret Wars into two movies. It would give them more time to develop the characters and story. Even if both Doomsday and Secret Wars end up being long films, screen time is limited, and some characters would inevitably get less focus – especially with Doomsday needing to heavily feature and build up Downey’s Doctor Doom. However, splitting the story could also create some issues.
As Sneider pointed out, making another Avengers movie would be incredibly difficult for Marvel Studios. The recent challenges with Doomsday demonstrate how complex these films are to produce. Coordinating so many actors proves to be a major headache, with some cast members, like Alan Cumming, filming their scenes completely alone using green screens and face replacement technology. Beyond the logistical hurdles, Avengers movies are extremely expensive, requiring a significant financial commitment from Disney. Considering the large investments already made in Doomsday and Secret Wars – which are concluding a somewhat inconsistent phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – the studio might hesitate to make such a costly commitment, especially with the current uncertainty in the movie theater business.
Splitting the Secret Wars story into two movies would be a smart financial move for Disney and Marvel, allowing them to add another potential blockbuster to their schedule. While Marvel movies aren’t performing quite as strongly as they did during the Avengers: Infinity Saga, the new Avengers films are still expected to be successful, especially with a relatively clear release window. However, simply for financial gain isn’t enough – the story would need a good reason to be split into two parts, and it’s hard to see what that reason could be. If the rumor is true, it would be similar to what happened with The Hobbit, which was originally planned as two films but ended up being stretched into a trilogy. Ultimately, the story felt drawn out and audiences grew tired of it.
Marvel is eager to avoid any missteps with its upcoming Doomsday and Secret Wars movies, as they see these films as crucial for revitalizing the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a challenging period. Secret Wars is particularly important, potentially serving as a fresh start for the franchise with a simpler, more focused storyline. Because of this, Marvel has a lot at stake. They need fans to stay excited, and a complicated release strategy—requiring multiple tickets to follow the complete story—could easily backfire. Fortunately, the Russo brothers, experienced Marvel directors, are at the helm. They’ve successfully managed large casts and complex plots before, as they did with the Infinity Saga, making them well-suited to bring the Multiverse Saga to a satisfying conclusion in just two films.
