Avengers vs. Dune 3 Box Office Showdown Could Be Bad News for Dwayne Johnson’s New Movie

Movie fans are gearing up for a huge battle at the box office this December. The long-awaited films Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are both set to release on the same day, an event playfully called “Dunesday.” While the recent Barbenheimer excitement involved movies appealing to different audiences, both Doomsday and Dune aim for similar viewers. However, most experts believe there’s enough demand for both films to succeed, particularly during the typically profitable holiday season. Beyond Avengers and Dune, other movies will also be competing for attention in December.

It’s not only potential award winners that are adding more screenings. A new Jumanji movie starring Dwayne Johnson is also coming out in December. According to Variety, theater owners are actually more concerned that Jumanji 3 will underperform in its opening weekend. This is because theaters will likely prioritize showings of Doomsday and the anticipated Dune: Part Three, leaving fewer screens available for Jumanji.

What Should Sony Do About Jumanji 3?

Dwayne Johnson has the live-action Moana remake coming out this summer, but a disappointing performance from the next Jumanji movie would be a setback. His recent sports biopic, The Smashing Machine, was a box office failure, earning only $21.1 million globally. Jumanji 3 was meant to be a successful return to crowd-pleasing films, proving Johnson’s continued popularity with audiences before he takes on more serious, award-focused roles (like the upcoming Hawaiian gangster movie directed by Martin Scorsese). Everyone involved hopes Jumanji 3 won’t be overshadowed by other big releases in its opening weekend.

The previous two Jumanji movies did well, earning nearly $1 billion worldwide, even while Star Wars sequels were also in theaters. However, the situation is very different now, and theater owners are worried about how well the new Jumanji movie will perform. Instead of competing with just one big blockbuster, it’s launching alongside two major films, Doomsday and Dune. This means theaters will be extremely busy scheduling showtimes to fit everything in, including movies that are already playing. Even if Jumanji starts strong, it will probably lose many screens to these bigger competitors.

It’s unlikely that either Doomsday or Dune: Part Three will change their release dates. Warner Bros. has already reserved IMAX theaters exclusively for Dune, and they’re not likely to give that up, especially since the film was designed for high-quality viewing experiences. Marvel has also heavily promoted Doomsday with multiple trailers and a countdown to its release. Unless something unexpected happens, both of these big movies will stay on track for December, which will make it difficult for Jumanji to compete.

Sony might be wise to postpone the release of Jumanji. For the new Jumanji movie to succeed like the previous ones, it needs to stay popular with audiences for a long time, but that’s unlikely with the current competition. Sony hopes this Jumanji film, which they’re presenting as the last in the current series and a celebration of the franchise, will be a big event. To make that happen, avoiding a release alongside big films like Avengers and Dune would be very helpful, even if it means releasing it outside of the holiday season. If Sony wants to do that, they should move the release date soon, before other movies fill those time slots, or they risk the film not performing well.
