Mod Sun is healing from this not-so-happy ending.
The lead singer of Scary Kids Scaring Kids recently talked about his year-long relationship with Avril Lavigne, and how their split in 2023 led him to focus on improving his mental wellbeing.
Mod, 38, shared on the November 6th episode of XO Bunnie’s Dumb Blonde Podcast that he and the artist connected through a fantastic record label. He described her as a genuinely gifted performer, saying it was wonderful to witness her talent. As a songwriter and producer for other musicians, he especially enjoyed creating a song and hearing her incredible voice bring it to life.
It turns out the former couple were already making music together during the pandemic. Mod, whose real name is Derek Smith, and Avril Lavigne, 41, released a song called “Flames” in January 2021. They hadn’t publicly announced they were dating yet—that came eight months later on Instagram—but he also helped write some songs for her album, Love Sux, the following year.
Their connection wasn’t just limited to the recording studio; they quickly fell in love and got engaged in April 2022.
Mod explained that while they and the other person are very different, she believes she had a positive impact on them. In return, this person greatly helped Mod mature and understand herself. Mod feels much more confident now, after spending the last three years questioning where she belonged.
The singer of “Karma” didn’t share the reasons for their breakup in February 2023, but mentioned he was working on improving his ability to understand others’ feelings. The “Sk8ter Boi” singer, who didn’t speak publicly about the split, began dating Tyga in March, though their relationship ended after only three months.

He shared that he prays daily, asking to lead with compassion and be a positive influence. He described his approach to empathy as shifting focus away from revenge. Instead of dwelling on being wronged, he tries to understand the other person’s perspective – to ‘step into their position’ – and let go of negative feelings.
As Mod focuses on his personal growth and well-being, he’s come to the understanding that he can’t hold onto any negative feelings towards his former partners.
Okay, so like, three months ago? I would have lost it if I’d seen her. Seriously, I’d have been fuming and hoping she heard every bad thing I thought! But now? Honestly, if I bumped into her on the street, I’d be all smiles. I genuinely hope she’s doing okay, you know? I’ve totally changed my tune.
