Today, gaming handheld firm AYANEO disclosed that they will cease production on the AYANEO Flip DS, a device resembling the Nintendo DS featuring twin screens, as well as the Flip KB model which sports a full-sized keyboard.
An official announcement on the AYANEO Flip Indiegogo page reads:
Following a thorough review of our project schedule and strategic objectives, it’s unfortunate to share that we don’t have any immediate intentions to manufacture the AYANEO FLIP at this time. This decision wasn’t taken lightly, but it’s essential for us to concentrate on providing top-notch experiences across our current and future product range.
It’s remarkable that the Flip DS series, which runs on Windows 11, managed to gather $867,542 through a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo just last year.
In this case, if you supported the Flip DS project but haven’t gotten your handheld device yet, it means that you won’t be getting one.

As a passionate admirer, I had the pleasure of delving into the AYANEO Flip DS for a comprehensive review. I enthusiastically bestowed upon it a well-deserved 4 out of 5 stars! This marvelous device boasts numerous advantages that left me impressed, but I also acknowledged a few tradeoffs to provide a balanced perspective.
The device boasted distinctive attributes unlike any other portable gadget, making its discontinuation a regretful occurrence.
The company acknowledges that this news might be disappointing for you, and they accept any inconvenience or frustration it may have caused. Their team is determined to assist each backer during this transition phase. Although the FLIP project has been put on hold indefinitely, they are still passionate about advancing handheld gaming technology, with your feedback playing a crucial role in guiding their future projects.
Upon learning that the Flip DS and Flip KB models will no longer be manufactured, I found myself questioning whether AYANEO might be facing difficulties.
Yet, the plan to employ feedback for shaping their upcoming projects clearly shows that AYANEO intends to launch more devices in the future.
AYANEO Flip refund options

AYANEO is giving full refunds for Flip backers who have not received their handhelds.
As a tech enthusiast, if I’m unable to receive the pledged product, I have the option to swap it for another comparable AYANEO product that is currently on offer. Any discrepancies in price will be appropriately addressed during the exchange process.
To start this refund process, you’ll want to email service@ayaneo.com within 30 days.
If you don’t get a response from our customer service within 3 days following my email to them, or if your initial email was blocked by our email server, please reach out to us via our website’s Livechat instead.
Hey Tech Buddy! If you’re among us who backed this project seeking a refund, here’s what I’d suggest. Keep an eye on your inbox as we’ll be sending out emails regarding refunds. If you don’t receive a personal email from us within the next few days, don’t hesitate to use our Livechat feature. It might just be the quickest way to get your query resolved and secure your refund. Happy tech-venturing!
It appears that those backers who have already received a Flip handheld do not have the option to return it or exchange it at this time.
But why is AYANEO Flip production halting?

I’m absolutely intrigued to learn the reason behind AYANEO’s decision to halt indefinitely the production of Flip DS and Flip KB devices.
To put it simply, the Flip Indiegogo campaign was a success as it managed to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars, making it no surprise at all.
It seems this situation might hint at some challenges they encountered during production, a design glitch, or perhaps a legal complication that the company had to navigate.
If you’re well-versed with AYANEO, you’d recognize their pattern of launching multiple handheld devices annually. It makes me ponder if this frequent release schedule might be the issue.
Perhaps the company spread its production too thin by offering too many models.
Opting for a clamshell-style handheld device with a dual screen or keyboard sets me apart from the mainstream handhelds like the Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch, ROG Ally, and Legion Go. This unique design choice caters to a more specialized market.
It’s possible that the company concluded that the market’s need for the handheld line wasn’t sufficient enough to continue manufacturing it.
As an analyst, I suspect that the high production costs associated with the handheld devices, specifically the AYANEO Flip DS and Flip KB, might have resulted in a lower Return on Investment (ROI) compared to other AYANEO products. I’ll continue to monitor developments and update this information as more details about their discontinuation become available.
