Stefan Golaszewski, the creator of popular comedies like Him & Her and Mum, and the 2022 drama Marriage, returns with his latest show, Babies.
This six-episode BBC series follows Stephen and Lisa, played by Paapa Essiedu and Siobhán Cullen, as they navigate the heartbreak of repeated miscarriages while trying to start a family.
In a recent exclusive video interview for our series, The TopMob Writers’ Room – where we explore the minds of screenwriters – Golaszewski explained how he began developing the show and gave viewers a preview of what to expect.
Golaszweski explained that ‘Babies’ is a story about a couple dealing with the loss of a pregnancy. While it isn’t based on her own life, she’s personally experienced similar challenges. This made her realize there was a need for more open and honest conversations about pregnancy loss, and she believes being direct and vulnerable can be incredibly healing.
What really struck me about this show is its hopeful approach, especially for those who’ve experienced loss and might be feeling incredibly isolated. It’s not just about presenting the facts – though it does that well – it’s about acknowledging the deep emotional grief that often gets lost when miscarriage is discussed solely in medical terms. The show aims to foster genuine understanding, so when someone shares their experience, others can truly empathize with what they’re going through, beyond just the clinical aspects.
“So that was kind of the impetus, really.”

When asked about the gap he mentioned in the conversation, Golaszweski explained that it’s simply a topic people avoid. He believes this is likely because it’s an unpleasant subject to discuss.
What struck me most about this film is how it subtly fosters a sense of silence around a difficult topic. It unintentionally creates a feeling that you shouldn’t discuss it, which then leads to a real sense of isolation and stigma. Honestly, I think anything that can break down those barriers and encourage open conversation is a huge win, and this film has the potential to do just that.
I pointed out to Golaszweski that while the series definitely has its share of heavy moments, it’s not all doom and gloom – there’s actually a good bit of lightness and humor sprinkled throughout, and he totally agreed with me.
The film is both a love story and a journey of personal growth, not just for the central couple but also for Dave, Stephen’s friend, who is portrayed by Jack Bannon, according to Golaszweski.
It’s crucial to share that story in a way that offers hope, comfort, and kindness. When someone is facing a difficult time, the last thing they need is to feel even worse.
He went on to say that when you’re telling a story, it’s important to make the audience feel at ease and engaged along the way.

When you’re appearing in people’s homes – whether on TV in the evening or on their phones while they’re relaxing – you’re entering a very personal and private moment in their lives. It’s a privileged space, as people are usually trying to feel something or simply unwind.
It’s a huge honor when people choose to watch your show – they’re giving you their valuable time. We should always strive to not only entertain them, but also make them feel comfortable and connected while they’re watching.
In a conversation for The TopMob Writers’ Room, Golaszweski discussed his other three series, sharing insights into his creative process and how he approaches his projects.
