Forty years after its debut, Back to the Future is still a beloved and influential film. The sequels successfully captured the magic of the first movie, creating what many consider a flawless science fiction trilogy. Recently, stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, famous for playing Marty McFly and Doc Brown, shared their thoughts on why the franchise continues to connect with audiences today.
To mark the 40th anniversary of the first movie, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd recently spoke with Empire magazine. They talked about why Back to the Future continues to resonate with audiences. While the films’ quality is often credited for their dedicated fanbase, the actors also believe the movies’ depiction of real-world issues contributes to their lasting appeal. They pointed to Biff Tannen and his family as strong examples of bullies, and how the films realistically portray bullying and the struggles of those who confront it, according to Fox.
It feels like we’re living in a time where bullying is common – not just from people, but in many forms. This film shows a character, Biff, as a bully, but challenges like time and even personal struggles, such as my experience with Parkinson’s, can also feel that way. The important thing is how we face these challenges with strength, determination, and courage – it’s about our ability to bounce back and keep fighting.
You know, I really think this movie is hitting a nerve with a lot of people. It’s resonating with them on a level they didn’t even realize they connected with. It’s like it’s unlocking something for them, and that’s pretty amazing to see.
Lloyd also discussed the lasting impact of the Back to the Future films, noting how they continue to resonate with audiences, particularly younger generations. He said he’s still surprised by how much the movies mean to people, even today.
‘Back to the Future’ Has Aged Perfectly

Universal
As a movie fan, I just love revisiting the Back to the Future trilogy. All three films are so close to perfect! What really gets me is the humor, the characters, and how exciting they are. It’s amazing how well these movies have held up over the years – even the jokes that don’t quite hit the same way now can’t ruin the fun. It’s rare to find a Hollywood series that feels so perfectly balanced, but Back to the Future really nails it.
The script by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale brilliantly blends humor, excitement, and science fiction. Steven Spielberg’s involvement as a producer is also incredibly impactful. However, it’s Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd who truly make the film special and remain the most memorable part of the series. Their characters, Marty McFly and Doc Brown, are timeless and have become iconic figures in pop culture – the kind of friends everyone wishes they had.
