As a huge fan, I think episode 9, “Why We Fight,” is the absolute best of Band of Brothers. It’s incredibly powerful, but honestly, it’s tough to get through. Band of Brothers was the first of the amazing war series produced by Spielberg, Goetzman, and Hanks, and most people agree it’s still the best one they’ve made.
Despite its patriotic themes, the series isn’t simply nationalistic. It realistically portrays the personal sacrifices of World War II and presents a balanced view of all involved. The episode “Why We Fight” demonstrates that the series doesn’t shy away from acknowledging wrongdoing.
“Why We Fight” Is Considered Band Of Brothers’ Best Episode
Each episode of Band of Brothers makes a strong argument for being among the series’ best, but “Why We Fight” stands out even more. This episode, the second-to-last in the miniseries, powerfully connects all the hardship, violence, and fear the men of Easy Company have experienced to the horrors of the Holocaust, giving it all greater meaning.
As American troops enter Germany, they start to feel the war is nearing its end, but they’re unprepared for what they’ll encounter. While on a standard patrol, soldiers stumble upon a concentration camp that still holds prisoners, including many Jewish people. Winters, along with the rest of his company, Easy, are deeply shocked by the horrific scene they discover.
Soldiers approaching the camp had no knowledge of the horrors within, and struggled to understand what they were seeing. As the full extent of the genocide became clear, each soldier and German civilian processed the shocking reality in their own way.
“Why We Fight” Also Features Some Of Band Of Brothers’ Most Heartbreaking Moments
The episode “Why We Fight” features some of the most emotionally powerful scenes in Band of Brothers. One particularly heartbreaking moment shows Jewish prisoners attempting to explain their horrific situation to American soldiers. It’s especially difficult to watch when an incredibly thin prisoner is asked if the camp is a criminal one.

The man instantly became alert and shook his head in anger, simply uttering the word “Jews.” The difficult scenes continued, with soldiers collapsing and prisoners offering them comfort. The situation worsened when a doctor insisted the soldiers stop providing food to the desperately hungry people.
He’s not trying to be unkind; he understands that giving them solid food right now could actually make things worse, given their weakened condition. This episode of Band of Brothers powerfully shows that even after the immediate dangers of World War II have passed, its consequences will continue to impact people for many years to come.
