Barbie Releases First Doll With Type 1 Diabetes, Glucose Monitor

This Barbie is raising awareness.

They’re incorporating it into Mattel’s diverse Fashionista Barbie collection for the first time: a doll representing the first character with Type 1 Diabetes.

In a statement issued on July 8, Mattel highlighted that their partnership with Breakthrough T1D is centered around inclusivity and empathy.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but be enthralled by this doll who embodies a powerful message close to my heart. She sports a glucose monitor patch and a wearable insulin pump, technology that mirrors the daily struggle of those living with diabetes. Tucked away in her purse is a Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM), a constant companion in managing this chronic condition. The blue polka dot outfit she dons isn’t just a fashion statement; it symbolizes awareness about diabetes, a disease that requires our unwavering attention and understanding.

Mattel stated that this new addition to the Barbie line aims to represent more children and encourages doll play that goes beyond a child’s immediate experiences. This promotes a stronger sense of inclusivity and empathy, aligning with the core values of Barbie’s mission which include fostering these qualities.

To mark the launch, Mattel paid tribute to two influential figures living with Type 1 diabetes, Peloton instructor Robin Arzón and Lila Moss, daughter of supermodel Kate Moss, by creating unique dolls especially for them.

22-year-old Lila, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 12, personally customized every aspect of her Barbie doll. Dressed in a stylish little black dress, the doll reflects Lila’s real-life persona, complete with a continuous glucose monitor on its right arm, an insulin pump on the left thigh, and a PDM tucked inside a fashionable black handbag. To finish off, the doll wears sleek gold jewelry, just like Lila does herself.

In an interview with British Vogue on July 8, Lila expressed her hope that this Barbie will make people realize that despite having T1D, you can achieve everything you aspire to do. She also hoped it would inspire others to feel proud in displaying their own insulin patches and pumps.

She added, “We don’t need to hide our differences.”

Not just does Lila anticipate that the Barbie doll will boost awareness, but it also aims to offer some comfort to her mom during their separation.

Lila playfully remarked, “Just like my mum used to say, ‘I wish I could keep you in my purse!’ Now, it seems that dream might just come true.
