A compelling part of the Dragon Ball series is how it gradually builds a vast and detailed universe, extending to the furthest reaches of the galaxy. Certain planets, like Namek, Vegeta, and Yardrat, have become essential to the story. However, some planets that initially seemed important have faded into obscurity and likely won’t reappear, even though they once served a purpose. Planet Kanassa, featured in Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku, is a good example. While seemingly random, Kanassa is unique because its inhabitants have psychic abilities, allowing them to foresee the future.
During a particular scene, Bardock receives prophetic visions after killing a member of the Kanassan race. It’s easy to miss the significance of the Kanassans’ psychic abilities since Bardock dies soon after this is revealed. However, their powers could be crucial for revitalizing the Dragon Ball storyline, strengthening supporting characters, and even providing a way to defeat Black Frieza when the Dragon Ball Super manga continues.
Dragon Ball Super’s Multiverse Makes Kanassa’s Psychic Powers Relevant Again
It would have been understandable if Kanassa disappeared after the Saiyans attacked, but according to the story of Bardock, the planet actually survived. Interestingly, Dragon Ball Z later reveals that the Kanassans have a special psychic ability called Future Punch, which can be taught to others. We even see a Kanassan using this ability while training in the afterlife on Grand Kai’s Planet.
The Other World is a place full of powerful beings and abilities. For example, Goku learned the Fusion Dance there from a Metamoran spirit, even though he never visited their planet. This shows that people can still learn and use the unique skills of races like the Kanassans, even after those races are gone.
In Dragon Ball Super, Universe 6 is presented as a parallel world very similar to Universe 7. It features races like Saiyans and Namekians, and even characters resembling those from Universe 7, including a counterpart to Frieza. It’s probable that this universe also has Planet Kanassa, but one that wasn’t destroyed by the Saiyans or Frieza. Returning to Universe 6, and specifically featuring Kanassa, could be a surprisingly good storyline for Dragon Ball Super.
Kanassa’s Psychic Skills Could Make Irrelevant Z-Fighters Important
Bardock doesn’t really develop his inherited psychic abilities from Toolo, largely because he avoids acknowledging what he’s experiencing. In contrast, characters in Dragon Ball Super would actively try to harness these powers and understand them fully.
I often see fans wanting to make the main characters like Goku and Vegeta even stronger, pushing their power levels to unbelievable heights. But honestly, that feels risky. If they become too powerful, fights lose all tension – where’s the drama if nobody can really challenge them? I think it’s much more interesting to take a character who’s been on the sidelines, someone we’ve almost forgotten about, and give them a crucial role, like the ability to foresee events. That creates a real surprise and raises the stakes in a much more compelling way.
Chiaotzu has a history with psychic abilities, and while he couldn’t predict the future, it would have been a useful skill for him. The same goes for Tien, Yamcha, and even characters who don’t usually fight, like Videl, Chi-Chi, or Launch – they all could have benefited from the power of foresight.
Kanassans’ Psychic Powers Could Be Connected To Black Frieza’s Bid For Power
Gaining psychic powers and seeing the future is almost always a good thing, but it makes you wonder why the Dragon Ball Super manga is now revisiting the long-forgotten Planet Kanassa. The reason is simple: there’s still one major storyline that needs to be wrapped up.
Black Frieza is more powerful than Goku and Vegeta in their strongest forms, like Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego. Simply being strong might not be enough to defeat him. If the heroes had the ability to foresee the future, they could stop Black Frieza’s plan to take over multiple universes before he even gets started, giving them a crucial advantage he wouldn’t expect.
Interestingly, the English dub of Bardock – The Father of Goku reveals that Frieza knew the Kanassans had psychic powers, and this was a key reason he wanted to conquer their planet. Dragon Ball Super might revisit this concept. It’s possible Frieza is aware of other species with psychic abilities, and he could use them as a safeguard during the Black Frieza Saga to ensure he remains powerful and isn’t tricked. This could alert the heroes and start a conflict over psychic dominance.
Kanassa offers a lot of potential for future Dragon Ball Super storylines, even beyond the Black Frieza arc. Toyotarou clearly enjoys exploring lesser-known parts of the Dragon Ball universe, and bringing Kanassa back would be a welcome nod to the series’ history. It’s a great way to organically link the future of Dragon Ball Super with its roots.
