Batgirl’s Secret Brother Is a Terrible Fighter (And That’s Great)

The complexity of Batgirl’s life has significantly increased. Not only did the enigmatic group called the Unburied murder her mother and aim to complete their vengeance against her, but she recently discovered that she is not an only child of Lady Shiva. Shiva and Ben Turner, also known as the Bronze Tiger, had a son named Tenji, the Jade Tiger. Cassandra Cain already has numerous brothers within the Bat Family, but this time she must confront a blood brother. This new revelation comes at a particularly inconvenient time, as she has only just embraced her mother’s legacy. Unfortunately, this family reunion will undoubtedly be interrupted by those seeking Batgirl’s demise. Despite being prepared for combat, there is one issue: Tenji lacks skill in fighting. In this situation, his ineptitude at fighting is particularly detrimental given his lineage.

The Secret Sibling Is Out (of Time)

Lady Shiva’s last message to her daughter instructed her to locate the Bronze Tiger. After discovering that her mother had a secret life of traveling globally, battling crime alongside Ben, Richard Dragon, and her sister, Cass believed she would uncover long-awaited answers and join forces against the Unburied. Instead, she encountered a Bronze Tiger who refused to aid in the fight and an unknown brother, hidden from the world, even the most renowned detectives. Overwhelmed by this revelation, Cass struggled, but her brother Tenji was thrilled to meet his long-talked-about sister. He’d spent years training to impress and eventually join Cass and Shiva in their missions, under the assumption that his mother was a hero. Sadly, the truth about both parents’ pasts had remained hidden from Tenji, ultimately coming back to haunt him.

In a turn of events at Dragon Ranch, Norbu the Untested, the first of three swords sent to eliminate Batgirl, declared his mission to extinguish Lady Shiva’s bloodline forever. Cass, renowned for her exceptional fighting skills, was challenged by him to an unyielding duel. In anticipation of making him submit in mere five moves, she prepared her attack. However, Tenji, Shiva’s son, desired to participate and hurled himself into Batgirl’s offensive maneuvers, disrupting the plan and potentially risking his own life. As a result, Bronze Tiger was compelled to step in and forcefully toss Norbu into the barn with great force.

After they managed to stabilize Tenji and give him some respite, Batgirl questions why he fights as if he’s never faced a lethal opponent before. Although trained by formidable fighters like Shiva, Bronze Tiger, and Richard Dragon – three of the most skilled in the DC Universe – none of them had prepared him for an adversary intent on taking his life. They treated him gently, even allowing Shiva to go easy during her annual visits. In contrast, Cassandra Cain (Batgirl) and Shiva have engaged in numerous life-or-death battles and even faked each other’s deaths. Ben exclaimed that he didn’t want Tenji to suffer the same fate as Cass, and she retorted that her experiences have made her a survivor, while Tenji is ill-prepared for a world where everyone seems determined to kill him. Upon regaining consciousness, Tenji discovers that everything he thought he knew about his parents was false.

Siblings Against the World

Tenji explained to Cass that he’s been working tirelessly to build up his strength so he could depart the ranch and reunite with their mother, joining her in the world as a hero they could both be proud of. His dream has always been to stand alongside them, and Shiva’s final wish was for Cass to find him. Regardless of her feelings, they were siblings, and Tenji vowed to fight by her side. Fortunately, he managed to convince her at that time, because Norbu suddenly barged into the room, his strength amplified by the enigmatic blue blossoms the Unburied tend to. Now a formidable duo, they swiftly overpowered Norbu in just five maneuvers, utilizing the technique Shiva had taught Tenji. However, just as Norbu was about to launch his final attack, his head was severed from his body by the second Sword Wu Bing, who announced he’d come with an offer Batgirl must accept, or face death.

The deadliest enemies are chasing Cass and Tenji, but Jade Tiger isn’t prepared yet. However, this is good news since he’s lived a peaceful life, away from harm. Now, Cassandra Cain needs to join forces with her brother and teach him how to navigate their dangerous world – a world created by their lethal parents. This could lead to a profoundly moving narrative and character development, which I am eagerly anticipating. Cassandra must quickly bring Tenji up to speed or their bond might be tragically short-lived. I strongly suggest this book to fans of Batgirl or martial arts comics as it combines the best elements from both genres in a long time.
