Batman: Arkham Asylum Looks Like Arkham Knight In This Unreal Remake

Okay, so it’s been a long time since we’ve had a proper, full-on Batman: Arkham game on consoles or PC. After Batman: Arkham Knight, things went quiet. There’ve been a couple of VR titles – like Batman: Arkham Shadow for Meta Quest and, well, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (which, let’s be honest, didn’t exactly hit the mark for Arkham fans). Now, it looks like a fan-made project might be the closest we get to a new Arkham experience for the foreseeable future, which is a little sad but also kinda cool!

A YouTube creator named RRe36 recently showed off their progress on a stunning Unreal Engine 4 recreation of Batman: Arkham Asylum, drawing inspiration from the entire Arkham series. While it’s a true remake, expanding significantly on the original game, the creator doesn’t plan to release it to the public.

We Need This Arkham Asylum Remake Now

This video highlights recent work on the Unreal Engine Batman Arkham project, featuring examples of what’s been created, such as:

  • An updated Arkham Asylum-style menu
  • An Armored Arkham Batsuit skin showcase
  • A Lord Batman skin showcase
  • An Alex Ross Batman skin showcase
  • An Arkham Sewers Combat Challenge with the Armored Batsuit
  • An Arkham Archives Combat Challenge featuring Lunatics and the Lord Batman skin
  • The Iceberg Lounge with the Alex Ross Batman skin

Okay, the combat footage looked amazing, but honestly, the bits showing off the Arkham Sewers and Archives? Those were really something special. They gave me the clearest idea of what a remake of Batman: Arkham Asylum could actually look like – it was super impressive!

This isn’t a modification of the game, and it’s not a complete remake of Batman: Arkham Asylum. According to RRe36, the project’s creator, there are two main reasons why it might never be released for others to play.

Right now, no. Using assets from the original games would likely cause copyright problems. Plus, this project has always been something I do for fun, and turning it into a public endeavor with deadlines and expectations would take away that enjoyment.

Sharing the project files isn’t possible, mainly because they’re messy and the total size is huge—over 80GB, and that doesn’t even include the custom engine build, which is another 50GB or more.

Batman Has Never Looked Better

Even now, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a visually impressive game, largely due to its striking Gothic designs and lighting in Arkham Island. Batman: Arkham City introduced its own distinct style, but Batman: Arkham Knight truly pushed the boundaries with incredibly realistic graphics that still hold up against today’s games built with Unreal Engine 5 for current-generation consoles.

RRe36’s project is a stunning reimagining of the original Batman: Arkham games. It features incredibly detailed character models and incorporates elements from Batman: Arkham Knight, like interactive environments. The result is a remake of Batman: Arkham Asylum that any fan would dream of seeing.
