As a devoted movie buff, I’m utterly captivated by the current predicament faced by the Justice League. They’re up against a perilous menace from every direction and era. The thrilling crossover event titled “We Are Yesterday” has brought together Batman/Superman: World’s Finest and Justice League Unlimited, where Gorilla Grodd masterfully assembles his revamped Legion of Doom with the time-displaced elite members from their past. This tactical move has finally given them the upper hand against the Justice League.
The League has been grappling with internal strife, especially after Airwave, displaced in time, chose to betray them. But hope is not lost. In Justice League Unlimited #7, reinforcements arrived from various timelines, promising heroes hailing from different eras. However, the challenge lies in ensuring these timeless champions can return to their respective times.
Gorilla Grodd Became the New Darkseid
In my admiration for the intricate plotlines of these superhero tales, let me recount one such captivating story where I, as an observer, found myself drawn to the cunning machinations of the villain, Gorilla Grodd. His objective was to sow discord worldwide, masking himself as the malevolent entity Inferno.
To execute his plan, he cleverly enlisted the aid of a novice hero, Airwave, infiltrating the Justice League Unlimited under false pretenses. By enhancing Airwave’s powers, Grodd was able to transport his consciousness back in time, where he gathered the past incarnations of the Legion of Doom and teleported them to the future.
The unsuspecting Airwave eventually uncovered the deception, but it was too late, as he was struck by one of the Legion’s stolen artifacts from the past, seemingly ending his life. With this new Legion at his side, Grodd launched a surprise attack on the JLU and managed to subdue the entire league, scattering them across different time periods, leaving them stranded without any means of returning home.
With no one left to stand against him, Grodd unveiled his ultimate scheme – to absorb the Omega Energy left behind by the fallen Darkseid upon his demise. True to form, Grodd betrayed his team and absorbed the energy, evolving into a more powerful entity, christening himself the Gorilla God.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but feel relieved that Airwave miraculously endured, existing in the limbo of time itself. Eager to rectify this chaotic situation, he harnessed his temporal powers to assemble an extraordinary team – not only the Justice League Unlimited, but also heroes from various epochs like Jason Todd’s Robin, Abin Sur, Aquaman with the hook hand, Silver Age Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn in her original Suicide Squad costume, the Flash from “Year One”, Batman of “Zero Year”, Jonah Hex, and Batman Beyond. United, these extraordinary individuals took on the formidable Grodd, the Gorilla God, and his Legion of Doom who were manipulating time.
In the climactic battle, The Atom managed to retrieve Martian Manhunter’s powers from Gorilla God, which allowed the Martian hero to disrupt Grodd’s focus long enough for a powerful ally to strike. With Omega Energy still coursing through his veins, Airwave charged at Grodd, resulting in an immense explosion. When the dust settled, Airwave was nowhere to be found, Grodd returned to normal, and every time-displaced hero took a moment to intimidate the Joker before Batman Beyond subdued him.
The day was saved, but it seemed that our victory would come at a cost – the small army of heroes Airwave summoned were far from finished with their mission.
The Heroes from All Ages Are Stuck in the Present
Currently, Superman disclosed that due to the chaos caused by Grodd and restrictions imposed by other entities, no member of the League can travel through time. Consequently, all devices used for time travel have ceased functioning, leaving them confined to the present. This predicament offers an array of exciting possibilities for tales to be spun. Many heroes now stranded in the present have contemporaries they can interact with, making for intriguing storylines. Imagine, for instance, a fiery Jason Todd engaging Red Hood or a young Wonder Woman discovering she has a daughter – these scenarios promise captivating narratives.
Delving deeper, the unique heroes such as Abin Sur and Terry McGinnis hold some of the most captivating and heartfelt narratives. Imagining Abin Sur encountering Hal Jordan and witnessing his successor, or simply engaging with the contemporary Green Lantern Corps, is a prospect that genuinely thrills me. However, it’s my anticipation that peaks highest when considering the dialogue between the Batman of Neo-Gotham and the original Gotham Batman. Ever since Terry McGinnis’ debut in the “Batman Beyond” series, he has been a beloved character among fans. The emotional bond between him and a younger Bruce Wayne, with the fully operational Batman Family, would be an incredible sight to behold.
Yet, considering that over a dozen heroes have found themselves stranded against their will, I can’t help but feel they won’t linger for long. They may well be returned home during the conclusion of this tale in the forthcoming issue, or following the crossover with the Absolute Universe later this year. Nevertheless, I believe we should seize every moment while these cherished characters traverse our present timeline.
