Will Friedle, who voiced Terry McGinnis in Batman Beyond, has confirmed he won’t reprise his role, regardless of future projects. During a panel at Animate! Columbus 2025 last month, Friedle shared that until November 2022, he had been keen on playing Terry or even reviving the Batman Beyond series. However, the passing of his co-star Kevin Conroy, who was the voice of Batman for many years, has made it difficult for him to re-enter that world without Conroy present. Conroy lent his voice to Batman from Batman: The Animated Series through Justice League Unlimited, Static Shock, and all the DC animated films throughout the 2000s and 2010s.
If you had posed that question to me three years ago, I would have eagerly responded with an emphatic “Yes! Sign me up for the microphone immediately.” However, with Kevin no longer part of the project, I’m unsure if I could step back into that role again. I believe they might need to recast both roles, as reprising Terry without Kevin as Bruce just doesn’t seem feasible for me.
In 2023, Mark Hamill, much like Friedle, made a similar announcement – he wouldn’t reprise his role as the Joker in any more DC projects following the demise of Conroy. Just as Friedle did, Hamill shared this news directly with fans at a convention, Fan Expo San Francisco. He expressed, “Without Batman, there’s no humor in crime.” Similar to Friedle, Hamill based his decision to participate in a DC project on whether Conroy would be involved as well.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Hamill recalled that people would contact him saying, “They want you to play the Joker,” to which his response was always, “Is Batman played by Kevin?” If the answer was yes, Hamill would eagerly respond, “I’m in.” He explained that their dynamic was reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy, and without Kevin, he didn’t feel there was a Batman for him to work with.
Kevin Conroy played Batman for a longer period than any other actor across all mediums. This includes television shows, animated movies, and even video games like the Arkham series where he provided his voice. For fans of the Caped Crusader, Batman Beyond was especially exciting because it introduced a new concept not derived from comics. However, due to its popularity, it has since become part of the comic book narrative.
Conroy, who was 66 years old, sadly passed away at a New York City hospital on November 10, 2022. His cause of death was intestinal cancer and its related complications. Since then, many in the animation industry have paid tribute to him, while those involved with DC Comics in various media have also praised his significant contributions. At present, fans can watch Batman Beyond on HBO Max.
