Warner Bros. Discovery and James Gunn are under pressure to build on the success of the recent Superman movie. While the focus is currently on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, they’ll soon need to introduce a new major hero. Everyone knows Batman will eventually join the DC Universe, and the search for the actor to play Bruce Wayne is already shaping up to be very different this time around.
There was a lot of excitement when David Corenswet was cast as Superman, but the search for a new Batman always creates even more buzz. Every time Hollywood chooses a new actor to play The Dark Knight – from Michael Keaton to Adam West and Christian Bale – it’s a big deal. Now, as James Gunn and his team look for their Batman for the DC Universe, anything could happen in 2026, especially considering how much has changed with recent movie releases since 2025.
2025’s DCU Batman Casting Race Had 5 Frontrunners
2025 was a big year for Superman with his successful introduction into the DC Universe, but fans immediately started discussing who should play Batman next. Although many actors were suggested, including Aaron Taylor Johnson, by the end of the year, five names consistently rose to the top of fan wishlists.
- Brandon Sklenar (35): Best known for his roles in Vice, Midway, It Ends With Us, and The Housemaid
- Alan Ritchson (43): Best known for his roles in Smallville, Blood Drive, Titans, and Reacher
- Glen Powell (37): Best known for his roles in The Expendables 3, Hidden Figures, Top Gun: Maverick, Twisters, and The Running Man
- Tom Brittney (35): Best known for his roles in Outlander, The Syndicate, and Grantchester
- Oliver Jackson-Cohen (39): Best known for his roles in The Haunting of Hill House, The Invisible Man, and Dracula
With 2026 halfway over, opinions on who should play Batman in the DC Universe are changing. Some actors who were popular choices a year ago are now less favored, while others are rising in the rankings. Actors’ careers evolve quickly, and their popularity can change a lot in just a year. For example, Ritchson is much more well-known now than he was in 2025.
2026’s Movies & Shows Have Changed What The DCU Batman Casting Race Looks Like
Alan Ritchson’s success as the lead in the popular series Reacher has made him a well-known actor. With Reacher consistently getting high ratings and likely continuing for the foreseeable future, Ritchson is very busy. This makes it difficult for him to find time to film a large-scale project like a Batman movie. Though he was once a top contender for the role in 2025, his growing popularity with Reacher now makes it unlikely he’ll be able to take on the part of Bruce Wayne.
Actors like Powell, who fans have suggested for roles, are now facing challenges due to their rising popularity. Since appearing in The Running Man, Powell has a lot of new projects lined up, including a film called The Great Beyond directed by J.J. Abrams. Although he’s known for his action roles, Powell’s busy schedule makes it unlikely he’ll be able to commit to the DC Universe, leading fans to favor less famous actors for the role of Batman.
Okay, so the internet is really excited about Brendan Sklenar as the next Batman, and honestly, I can see why. At 35, he’s young enough to play Bruce Wayne for a long time, and the guy is a genuinely good actor. I was particularly impressed with his performance as Spencer Dutton in 1923 – he really proved what he can do. He only has two projects lined up for 2027, which means he could realistically take on a massive role like Batman. More importantly, he’s got the chops to pull it off. Now that DCU is focusing on Supergirl, fans are eagerly waiting for James Gunn to finally reveal who he’s chosen to be The Dark Knight, and after seeing the buzz around Sklenar, I’m hoping it’s him!
