Batman is renowned for his unwavering dedication to rescue the day, no matter the cost. He never resorts to killing or allowing harm to come to others, yet he’s prepared to compromise the trust of those closest to him to achieve his goals. The Dark Knight has a track record of such actions, and while they often lead to unfortunate consequences for both himself and those he aims to aid, this may not deter him from repeating them. Once more, Batman is poised to act in secret against the Justice League, an action that could potentially dismantle all that the Justice League Unlimited has worked hard to establish.
Since the “Tower of Babel” narrative suggested that Batman had hidden strategies to neutralize his allies should they pose a threat, it’s clear that the Caped Crusader has persistently taken covert actions behind the backs of his closest allies to prepare for his escalating paranoia. Following the devastating “We Are Yesterday” crossover event, Batman feels the Trinity must delve into the pasts of every League member, without their awareness. Despite opposition from his comrades, Batman secretly consults Red Tornado about carrying out these checks anyway. The significance of Batman’s decision cannot be overstated, as it encapsulates the essence of his character, no matter which option he chooses.
Choosing to Invade People’s Privacy
Essentially, Batman is a detective who focuses on preventing crime rather than solving it after the fact. He leaves no stone unturned in his pursuit of justice and is always prepared for the worst-case scenario. If he were to have Red Tornado access an algorithm that reveals the personal information of every superhero, including their secret identities, he could potentially unmask any potential traitors within the Justice League Unlimited. However, this action would likely provoke anger from his fellow heroes due to privacy concerns. Batman has a history of taking matters into his own hands, as evident in stories like “Tower of Babel” and the Brother Eye satellite, so it’s not surprising that he might take such drastic measures again.
The upcoming conflict could significantly intensify the tension among the Trinity members, which is excellent for adding more drama as DC approaches its significant showdown with Darkseid. This tension is particularly noticeable now, given that they are preparing for the fighting tournament called “DC K.O.”, where a winner will become the new Darkseid. This tournament could potentially drive a rift within the Trinity, setting up an intriguing confrontation between Batman and Superman during the event. After all, many people often discuss the possibility of these two characters clashing, and their animosity has already been building prior to Batman making this decision.
The Omega Energy can only be harnessed through pain and anger, so the fractured relationship between two strong allies as they battle each other could certainly generate a substantial amount of that negative force. On the other hand, there’s always another path to consider as well.
Choosing to Let Things Stand
Speaking as a devoted moviegoer, I’ve seen time and again how Batman has chosen to put himself ahead of those closest to him, taking on tasks he shouldn’t. Yet, each time, the Dark Knight learns that isolation isn’t the solution. In Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez’s latest “Batman” series, we witness his journey towards understanding that change is possible for everyone.
The Batman we know has learned from his past mistakes of betrayal countless times, and grown because of them. With the enigmatic end to the scene where Red Tornado proposes running an algorithm, it’s just as plausible that Batman chooses not to invade the privacy of his fellow Leaguers this time. Instead, he trusts in Superman and Wonder Woman’s vision.
